GDT: Game 44: Sharks @ Utah 6:00pm NBCSCA

I mean, nobody likes being down 4v5 ... Except like the best 5 in the league.
Regardless of what the stats say, I maintain that our scheme sucks and that we are more lucky than good on the penalty kill. And that is a hill I'm prepared to die on.

Celebrini is struggling and could use a shake up. Give him a forechecker and a shooter. Graf and Toffoli might be a good combo to try.

The underlying statistics seem to support this. Smith isn't dragging down Celebrini, Celebrini has just been playing poorly recently.
What underlying stats are you referring to?

I think it appears that way because his line has been so ineffective. He's still making plays but due to poor winger play the line is getting hammered and not playing in the offensive zone. He needs an NHL quality player to form his line's "pair". Will Smith cannot be that guy at this time.

Sad to break up the bromance but Celebrini and Smith are Not An Effective Team.

Ok The Blender continues to spin.
New Lines Since Kostin is Hurt. And Bordeleau is called up from Cuda.

1. Graf-Celebrini-Kovalenko
2. Eklund-Bordeleau*-Zetterlund
3. Tofoli--Granlund-Kunin
4. Goodrow-Wennberg-Delandria

Best I can do is:
Graf - Celebrini - Kunin
Eklund - Granlund - Goodrow
Toffoli - Smith - Dellandrea
Zetterlund - Wennberg - Kovalenko

Two things.

One, from the moment I first got a chance to see Celebrini and Smith play against NHL competition in the preseason, I 100% had different expectations of each guy based on what I saw there.

Two, this was one of Celebrini's worst games as a Shark. Let's not pretend he was all over the place making plays tonight because he wasn't.
He played like a bum and it's annoying.

You know a lot of the team's current angst boils down to lack of Jake Walman. It's hard to overstate how much he means to this team, he absolutely drives the offense like no other d we have and he is especially good when he gets a chance behind the lower lines.

Terrible effort from a team that could have easily taken 2 points out of this...
Georgiev was solid tonight, gotta give him that. The difference with how they play in front of Askarov and Georgiev is huge though, I understand it though.
Can we just skip to the next year where Celebrini, Smith and Askarov just take over.

Celebrini and Smith should play better before thinking about taking over anything

Thanks to the refs for helping with the tank job by not calling the interference on Thrun. Doesn’t usually get called / is borderline, but when a play like that leads to a great scoring chance, it’s almost always called

I’m really struggling with this team at the moment. I don’t expect them to be good, but it just sucks seeing them get worse and having to see plugs like Goodrow, Rutta, etc. stink it up and never get benched or scratched.

Then having to read articles in consecutive days from Sheng about Warsofsky’s approach to benching or scratching players - but no mention of the above plugs, and then today’s article trying to justify specific microstats to say “see Ferraro and Goodrow are actually good”.

It feels like I’m going insane and watching a completely different product to what the club and beat reporters see.

If you had more expectations then a 30 point player then that is on you, and that is exactly what he is performing at.
It’s not about the points totals with Smith it’s more about him being slow AF and overwhelmed he’s not progressing and seems content on still trying to play the college game

Were we taking runs at Stenlubd at all?
Anybody square up to him?
I see he managed to I jure another Sharks star player

(side note, it wounds me deeply that whoever named this gif called it "Sideous Smile" even though it's clearly from Return of the Jedi when that name did not exist.)
Not as much as it wounded me when I found out that the Darth Vader that I was told hunted down and destroyed the Jedi only every killed Jedi under the age of 7. Nice writing George.

Nah, that doesn't bother me. One way that I differ from most modern fans that eat up all of the advanced metrics is that I never let some bullshit pretend stat tell me something different than my eyes tell me. I don't need an advanced stat to tell me Celebrini is very good or that Goodrow is dogshit.

But as much as the game itself pissed me off tonight (and for someone who feels very strongly that this team needs to lose a lot of games to make sure they have a chance to pick in the top 4), what pissed me off even more is reading the post-game reactions here. It feels to me like way too many of our fans want to have their cake and eat it too. They want to add a Schaefer or a high-end forward, but they don't want to pay the price of losing a lot of games along the way. I could more easily understand the folks that are impatient and want to see more wins sooner (even though I don't think that's at all realistic - can people really not see how bad most of the guys on this team are and how young the rest of them are?) because I get that rooting for a losing team is not fun.

Some losses are more fun to watch than others. There was nothing entertaining about this loss. But if you're going to get mad and throw a hissy fit because Smith is not as good out of the gate as Celebrini and Askarov are and put all of the blame on him for Celebrini having no impact and not be equally upset at plugs like Goodrow and Kunin doing nothing with the few prime scoring chances we had tonight, then maybe consider the problem is you wanting easy scapegoats.
