Fans saying the players aren’t giving it their all just don’t get it. This is their all. They have 2 at most legitimate top 6 guys. They have a bunch of guys who are third and fourth liners on a contender. On defence they have a big dumb Russian who is good on a third pairing but miscast if he plays higher up. McAvoy is a number 2 dman, not a number 1 guy. Lohrei is good and young but still better served as a bottom pairing guy. Carlo is so overrated. Peeke? Wotherspoon? I ask, how is this a team that has spent to the r cap??

You didn’t read the last paragraph?

He didn’t build an abomination. He made mistakes like every other GM in sports does. He also did enough to get the team to a Final in 2019 where they had home ice and were the better team. Unfortunately, the players and coaches screwed the pooch. That wasn’t on Sweeney (except they should have had a better option than Backes).

In 22-23, he did everything you could possibly ask for from a GM for a contender. Having a historical season and he adds Bertuzzi, Orlov and Hathaway to a team that was already setting records. Again, the players and the coaches F’d up and let it slip away.

Lots of things Sweeney could have done better, but he did enough for them to win 2 Cups in 4 years, it just wasn’t to be. It’s easier to blame the GM than it is to blame all the players.

I think your post is very good and he did put enough around the players he needed to in order to win in 2019.Hats off on that, but this situation here is different.The cupboards are bare, they have barely any good young talent on roster and basically no core unless we are talking McAvoy Pasta Swayman.No centres there though.Anyhow not attacking your well thought out posts just don't think Sweeney can fix it .

Did it have to be this way though? Why did they spend so much money on Lindholm and Zadarov? Poitras and Wotherspoon playing regularly likely have more impact than those two busts .

When you don’t draft and develop, you have to overpay for free agents. I would have preferred another F over Zadorov, but everyone was clamoring for a C last season, so let’s not do the revisionist history thing now.

And no, Poitras and Wotherspoon are not having more of an impact than Lindholm and Zadorov.

The same core that could never beat the Bruins ? Sure the Leafs are a little better but it’s more about the Bruins have fallen off a cliff . Last year’s team is probably 1st in the division easily .

Don sweeney one of the best he isnt perfect which GM is ? He sure got us teams to win at least 1 and maybe 2. I feel bad for him.

Yes but it won’t happen. As long as the Bruins make the 1st round they’ll both still be employed. If they miss then maybe something happens.

Agreed. Trade a very talented guy who was not ready to be Captain and would never get you a Cup in exchange for an underwhelming return because you only negotiated with one team? That kind of Thornton trade?
