They are by no means guaranteed a playoff spot. Not all teams behind them currently are going to keep losing as they have some real scorers. Not to mention the games in hand.
Don't make the playoffs and stop the pain.
True but if this team can play to its potential they got a spot they gotta stop mental lapses . Tonight was a horror show.

Was there any way that the Bruins could have kept Ullmark and Swayman for this year?
Not with Zad or Lindholm.

Unless Jeremy kicked the can a year with a 1 year deal or maybe even took arbitration.

We did him a huge favor and I don't think expected him to be so greedy and go to the mat. He takes less long term if Ullmark is here bc of course Ullmark starting the opener might mean he wins the Vezina.

Sweeney got played like a fiddle by the U Maine businessman.

Tampa is losing with 4:23 left .
That was the kind of game that, with last year's goaltending, we would have won 4-2. They would have made all the saves they should, plus 1 or 2 they had no business making.

But no, both goalies asked to start 55 games this year. Both goalies signed for $8.25m. What team spends $16.5m on goalies?

The problem is too many large contracts for underperforming players. When they gave 9.5mil they were expecting Mac to continue to grow. He is stagnant and nowhere near the value.

Its not just him though. Every top player is underperforming their current value. Makes it very hard to get anything good in return if they continue to slide.

The Bruins GM did it to himself trading Ullmark before Swayman was signed .He put handcuffs on himself with Swaymans agent.

It would have been very difficult and other players would have needed to move out to clear cap space.

For sake of argument let's say Ullmark stayed and adds us to his NTC July 1 ending any chance of moving him that day and we still sign Zad and Lindy July 1.

How does it play out?

Swayman either takes 7-7.5 over 8 years or 5-6 mil for 1 year. He's not taking a shorter term deal of multiple years nor does he miss games and hold out (I think.)

If it's the latter you just move Peeke or Fredric and are compliant. The former you need to move 2 of them. Maybe put Marchand on LTIR to start the season.

Or trade Coyle/Carlo.

My guess is in that scenario , Donny pivots and looks to move Sway . As others have said paying both north of 6M wasn't going to happen. What we don't know was did Donny have a verbal agreement with Sway and then things went sideways.

Swayman is not playing like a number one goalie .
McAvoy is not a number one Dman.
But nothing are played and paid as if they were.
That'll kill any teams chances.
