I’m not saying he went into Price on purpose, but how come his skates went forward? Genuine question

2 reasons:

1) His right foot lagged behind while his left foot continued forward, forcing him into a split. Once he lost his balance, going head first would be nearly impossible.
2) As humans, it's our instinct to protect our heads. Going head-first could have been much more dangerous for Kreider.

People also forget that Price continued to play for the rest of the period. It's possible that he got injured after the hit, or made it worse by continuing to play.
