In today's NHL, the margin between winning and losing is paper thin. Every team has holes.

Right now the biggest pitfall for the Bruins is special teams. They can't kill a penalty and their power play is impotent.

The effects are not only seen on the scoreboard, but felt in the flow of the games. A PP goal against shifts momentum, as does a a dreadful PP for, especially when there are more scoring chances for the opposition.

Did they have any breakaways and missed the net? I don't recall any.

Still, that's 12 scoring chances a period. Hard to see in this game.
Start of the game, Marchand to Coyle all alone in front, Coyle missed the net pulling it to his backhand. Geekie late in the 3rd, Pasta set him up back door, open net, Geekie shanked it... Those are the types of chances we had in this game that were scoring chances and didn't result in shots on goal.

How many times a game do we hear...

Bruins shot.....just over the crossbar

Bruins shot.....just wide

Hit the damn goal
Or in McAvoys case, the shot goes right in the goalies chest. not low enough for a rebound and not on the edges for a goal attempt. The only reason I can see doing it, is if you want a face-off in the Off end.

Flubs and whiffs are scoring chances?

OK then.

It's all situational, and frankly while there are fixed criteria as to what constitutes a scoring chance statistically, the actual decision-making as to what is and isn't classed as one can be quite subjective.

But for sure a whiff can be a scoring chance. Suppose a player receives the puck wide open in the low slot but they fan on the shot. They still had a chance to score because they were in a good shooting position close to the net and the path the puck would have had to travel was not blocked by anybody other than the goalie. So there was a good opportunity but it was wasted. In that case a scoring chance is still quite logically added to the tally even though the puck never made it anywhere near the net.

'Just had Dunkin'': Capitals poke fun at Bruins after 3-1 win

After their victory, the Capitals wished the opposing fans a safe return home, but each vehicle had its own theme.

Dunkin' Donuts, the popular Massachusetts coffee chain, was featured in the jab. Washington also discussed the Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots' offensive line situation. Even a popular meme of comedian Larry David's camera frozen during a Zoom call was featured.

Well the jokes on them because 2 or 3 of those cars have non-American plates. You know, like in European Vacation.

I get it.

Also saw that the Bruins had 12 high danger chances. Does that mean if the player didn't whiff in that situation it was a high danger chance? That makes sense.

I guess my original thought was that using these stats to say the Bruins outplayed the Caps isn't a strong argument. Maybe in some cases its true. I just never got the sense that the Bruins were getting the better of the play in this case.

Even the Caps social media dork’s mother is cringing at the lameness of this “burn”.

Rough sledding raising a mega dork, I’d imagine. You have to love them I guess, but god they must make you wish you chose to go the nunnery route at times.

Good catch. What a franchise. The front office of a team that still holds the record for most losses in an NHL season and was swept at home in their only other final in 1998 has decided to be as obnoxious as their fans. That post comes from their official team account.

The top 6 scored zero and the 4th line was a problem.
Freddy's line was the best of the group, yet the high paid floaters carry on.

Geekie is the only one in the top 6 with a pulse and looks like he cares every game he plays.

If Pasta is hurt (If he is why is he playing)) put him on LTIR and use his money to make a trade, he's been useless otherwise.

You keep using this line. Doesn’t make freddy sucking any better. He has 5 goals. 2 in one game. He is supposed to be better this year based on last year’s production. Id be ok with his scoring if he would at least give 100% every game. He floats a lot. Doesn’t fight. Not very physical. He is likely gone soon.

The line was good because Koepke and Brazeau were good. Freddy didn't have too much to do with that as far as I could see.

OK then.

A chance to score is generally considered to be a shot attempt from the high danger areas of the ice: around the net or in the slot. It doesn't have to hit the net but I do believe a shot does need to be attempted in those areas for them to be considered a scoring chance; a player can't just stand there with the puck and pass it off.

" The National Hockey League (NHL) officially defines a scoring chance as “a clear and unobstructed opportunity directly resulting in a goal, missed shot, or blocked shot scored from within home-plate-shaped area in front of the net”. This definition has evolved over the years, with some advanced analytics websites like Natural Stat Trick using slightly different criteria to track scoring chances. "

Yes...the third line was obviously the strongest of the 4 lines. But I mostly saw Brazeau and Koepke with the majority of puck possession and Freddy out of position. He had a chat with Wilson, so that's nice.
The odd thing...Freddie leads us in hits. Weird.

Two places I can see him heading to...the Oilers who are the least physical of all NHL teams. If the Bruins wanted to upgrade the trade value, include Carlo, a guy the Oilers have had a wet spot over for a few years now.
And perhaps St. Louis...which is where Frederic is from. Plus a team not in our conference.

Swayman GA over his last 15 games...

1 or fewer = 5 games (33%)
2 or fewer = 8 games (53%)
3 or fewer = 12 games (80%)
4 or more = 3 games (20%)

60% of the teams in the NHL have a GF/GP at 3 or better. Swayman unfortunately is not on one of those teams. In fact the Bruins rank 29 of 32 in GF/GP. Only Chicago, Anaheim & Nashville have a worse GF/GP this season.

98% of his hits are ineffective at best and his chat with Wilson had the intensity of an MLB baserunner conversation with the fielder.

We can only pray a team is chasing the grass being greener and imagine they can unlock even mild intensity and powerforward hockey from Frederic.
