we we fought these guys for the last playoff spot. Now they are at the top of our conference while we at the bottom.

The Caps won the cup in 2018 and have been in the playoffs for several years after that, they had an underperforming year last season and the wings had an overperforming year.

A one year last year comparison does not truly define where the teams are, they were a piece or two from being a good team, the wings need more than a piece or two yet...The Caps are playing great hockey right now.

Caps have run circles around the Wings in terms of player acquisition

Lately everyone has. Since Debrincat, Yzerman hasn't really brought in anyone with much of a positive influence.. Hard to know what the logic is behind it, difficult to not be critical when you view it in basic terms. Picking up Laine and an asset vs trading Walman and an asset for nothing... I'm glad I am just a fan on a couch and don't have to answer the questions. Still a big fan of Yzerman, will be interesting to take a step back from analyzing every transaction in a few years and see what kind of team he has made.

They had #1 center Backstrom , then Kuznetsov, now I don't even know who is their number one center, Ovi was injured, doesn't matter, team still is very good.

Yzerman tried to bring veterans with cup experience. Stemkos is not in Red Wings uniform because Illich did not approve it, glad he did.
It's sounds like team is not fast and not smart enough

Stamkos not being here is a blessing in disguise. Our vets are over ripe at the moment. I won't lie and say I wouldn't have had some excitement if he did sign with Detroit, same as when Kane chose the Wings also. You know it has the potential to back fire easily but it's also a legend on your favorite team.

The changes in the off season have nothing to say?

I think Yzerman can't add players as it would tie his hand when the team is ready to compete.

Agreed. It's why Copp and Compher are not completely terrible... at least they have an end in sight. Yzerman could have went for longer term guys, but those extra years and the tail end of those contracts would be directly in when the potential window to be competitive starts. Not that Copp and Compher aren't underwhelming and frustrating to watch...

"The Butterfly Pavilion at the Smithsonian Institution located in Washington D.C. may not be re-opening until January 12th, but the Caps-Wings game today will have plenty of butterflies of its own, at least in some stomachs. We can expect that Detroit fans are looking forward to their Red Wings emerging from the cocoon of the last 30 games or so, maybe not as the most remarkable butterfly in the collection, but at least not playing hockey like they're pinned to a piece of cardboard."
