It's Saturday. It's Hockey Night in Canada. It's their last dance of the 2024/25 regular season. It's a marquee match up between your Central Division & NHL leading, Winnnipeg Jets, against our hated rivals south of the border and closest competitor for the Central Division crown, the Minnesota Wild.

The Jets return home off a lackluster loss in Selanne Land. Getting gut punched by The Ducks in front of their mother's, as the final few minutes of the 3rd period wound down. The Wild come skidding into the 204 on a three game losing streak. Taking L's from The Golden Knights (f***ers), Panthers and _____s.

It's too early to gauge where each club will finish in the standings. This game won't solidify a position on the divisional table. Notwithstanding, one has a golden opportunity to widen the gap, the other a chance to close it. Both should be salivating to get back to winning ways.

Can Winnipeg sweep Minnesota in the season series? Tune in tonight to find out!

------------------------

Examining the course of my life, hockey has always been there. My earliest childhood memories of listening to Jets games on the radio with my Dad. Going to the Winnipeg Arena with him. Skating my youth away at the community club outside my house.

The first time I got drunk was at those rinks. It was a muggy summer night and my friends and I used a couple tipped over nets as makeshift sofas. Later, I projectile vomited on the hood of a car in the lot of a dealership on Portage Avenue. We were stumbling to Robin's Donuts to get 1 dollar bags of day old's (if you know, you know). When we got there, I puked again.

The first time I kissed a girl, was outside a hockey rink. No, it wasn't that same night.

I moved away. Hockey followed.

When I proposed to my wife, I had come home from a game of road hockey. I was so excited that I didn't bother to change first. When I got down on one knee, I was still wearing my jockstrap (there were gym shorts overtop, sicko's).

At our wedding, I set up Stiga table hockey for guests to partake in. Mostly because my uncle would be there. I hadn't seen him in years and I wanted to beat that bastard after a childhood of torment. He was still too good...

The last photo taken of my brother before he died, he was wearing a Jets jersey. He had just bought it. The Blue Heritage Classic. #55.

Last year, while I was watching The Jets play Tampa Bay, my wife handed me an envelope. Inside was a card, telling me I was going to become a father.

I don't consider the Jets to be a possession of True North. I view the Winnipeg Jets, the city of Winnipeg and the people who live there, as symbiotic entities. Inseparable. Our personal love affairs with hockey and the city, is what brought back the Jets to life. It's what keeps them alive. It's what unifies us. In my opinion, there isn't a pro team and city out there, that are as dependent on one another.

Maybe that's why I feel disdain towards players who look down on Winnipeg. Winnipegers who adorn themselves in the colour's and crest of another team, from some other place. An owner who doesn't truly understand the people that make NHL hockey in Winnipeg possible. I suppose these are rants best left for another day.

Maybe this is all sentimental bs encouraged by one too many Guinness. You be the judge...

They call Minnesota The State of Hockey.

In Winnipeg, it's life in a state of hockey.

The old Winnipeg Arena upper deck where you took you life into your own hands after multiple beers.
Also no netting behind the goals , i know this because one time at a game a puck cleared the glass and like a dumbass i wasn't paying attention and got the puck right in the chest. Players were looking at me from the ice and St.Johns ambulance people were running up towards me and i waved them away because i was too cool for that.:laugh:About 10 minutes later i turned to my buddy and said let's go I'm in a tonne of pain. Man that hurt and i still have a little bump on my chest today from that.

Thanks @Ponds for your fantastic GDT and for sharing your private moments with us.

My memories go all the way back to the WHA days, seeing Hull, Hedberg and Nilsson was quite special. But I remember my Dad getting tickets to the NHL Jets one game and I was more interested in the antics of the Chicken Delight Chicken, as my sister's boyfriend was dressed in it that evening. Boy was my father mad at me, "I got these tickets so we could watch the game, not for you to watch some damn chicken." Ah, the things we remember...

Yes, my old Citizen radio met a sad end falling down those steep stairs and smashing at the bottom...😥

@Ponds your testimonial on how the game effected your life is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

I always thought the Wild’s rivalry with the Jets was forced and I never considered them as one. Until now. Put these guys away, show ‘em why the Jets are on top of the mountain. Don’t forget to give em noogies and a good ol’ face wash. GoJetsGo.

Awesome Ponds, now that had a chance to read that entirely. Love the a passion as you appear to be a man of true character.

Hockey has been in my life at a lot of turns as well.

I also got drunk the first time at the Southdale outdoor rinks then proceeded to get fries at McDicks. No puking. lol

Played it, Officiated it (10 years) which helped me in building confidence, dealing with BS , and improved my skating.

I commend you on pouring some guts on here! :thumbu:

Great post. The cat lady complains that we don't share enough about ourselves. You read Ponds' GDT a few times and maybe she's right. Well done, sir!
