My point is that both guys help each other. Neither is dependent on the other since McLellan has come in, which is the time frame we were discussing, Maf. No one's debating that Thornton didn't have a hugely better career than Marleau until their 30s.

I will say that when Marleau signed for 6.6 and then 6.9 million, most fans thought it was a fair deal, market price. When Thornton signed for 7.2 and then 7 million, everyone knew that it was a significant hometown discount, both times.

However, Thornton still frustrates me. He's easily the Sharks's best player pre-TMac, and probably their best player after. But in comparison to Marleau, it should be no contest. Thornton has the ability to win games on his stick. He's a future HHOFer lock. 30 years from now, only fans of SJ will really know anything about Marleau.

With Marleau, I feel as if he is giving all that's he's got. He simply isn't a great passer, he isn't physical, he isn't much of a boards-player, etc.. Thornton makes the viewer frustrated since he never takes it to the net, doesn't use his strength enough, doesn't battle enough it front, doesn't shoot more, etc. But we've seen Thornton do all those things. We know that he can handle the traffic in front; we know he has a deadly shot.

Thornton playing at his best should be right up there competing with Crosby, Malkin, and Stamkos as the cream of the crop in the NHL. Even at the age of 32.

And he's great with posession, wins board battles like crazy, and makes obscene passes out of nowhere that seem to even surprise the people he's passing to. He just needs to start clicking with someone who can put the damn puck in the net.

I think that if Clowe is traded for Koko Sheppard can be moved to the third line with Galiardi and Pavelski, while the fourth line can be Desjardins-Gomez-Warm body
