here's where we are at. there are seven teams in the West at +7 or better (wins minus regulation losses), and I have a difficult time seeing the Blues catch any of them without them pulling a Rangeresque plunge. WPG, DAL, MIN, EDM, VGK, LA, VAN

that means the playoff chase is to be at the top of this group:

Utah and Calgary at +4
Colorado +3
Blues even
Seattle -1

Blues are +3 in 11 games under Monty, and they qualitatively look like a more competitive team throughout the roster, and they just added a 1000 game top 4 NHL defenseman

The next two games are damn tough though, against definitely better teams. Maybe they steal one so they stay even

for context, there are 49-51 games left, and you need some runway
they are even now, but 96 points in 82 games is +14
so they have to gain approximately +14 in the next 49 games
and +3 every 11 games is almost that exact pace

an even cleaner way to state the pace is 4-2-1 every 7 games the rest of the season, that is +14

another way to think about it is, can Montgomery (+ Fowler) win 1 game every 7 games that Bannister would have lost in regulation?

I randomly caught some of the Tampa/Columbus game the other night and TB radio broadcast was talking how much better the Lightning are defending this yr. They given up 12 goals in their last 6 games. Goals might be hard to come by tonight.

I think we'll learn a lot about the team tonight. The honeymoon is clearly over, interested in the compete level and how we now stack up vs a competitive team. If we fold, my expectations for the season are gonna take a hit. Also, If 5 on 5 scoring doesnt improve, i expect us to slowly start to fall in the standings.

But they shouldn't be seeing NHL ice; and they certainly shouldn't be seeing NHL ice on the same pairing.
Just a recipe for disaster(as we just witnessed).
