As I understand, he always had issues. That explains why he was prone to losing it on the ice and getting into scrums in the past. I always saw him as the guy was temperomental and feisty like Patty Roy(I even thought he could play with us). But the sources was probably psychological problems.

Yes, he was diagnosed as bi-polar quite a few years ago, which leads to really high manic highs & extremely low depressions.
