That’s awesome!

That late Bruins team showed just how good of a coach at getting the most out of players Cherry was. A Cup would have been the icing on the cake. So right about Ratelle. Pure class and on a team loaded with toughness he stood out. A great example for the modern NHL player as to how conduct yourself on and off the ice.

There's a certain kind of hockey player and NHL great. You might call them quiet superstars. They do everything well, in understated fashion and with complete class.

Jean Ratelle was like that. So, in his way, was Bobby.

Jean Beliveau, of course, is the ultimate example.

In no particular order, a few that come to mind,

Red Kelly. Jaques Plante. Glenn Hall. Henri Richard. Bob Gainey. Jaques Lemaire. Larry Robinson. Milt Schmidt. John Bucyk. Mike Modano. Ron Francis. Joe Sakic. Steve Yzerman. Raymond Bourque. Adam Oates. Zdeno Chara. Patrice Bergeron. Jarome Iginla. Nicholas Lidstrom. Pavel Datsyuk. Ryan Smyth. Henrik Lundqvist.

Last night's game certainly wasn't boring. While the Bruins played some terrible hockey and shot themselves in the foot on multiple occasions, they also displayed a lot of perseverance and what Brick calls 'sticktuitiveness' to keep battling back and tie and ultimately win a game that they never led. After Ullmark made those couple of huge stops and Geekie and Pasta brought the team back to life, the Bs rallied really well and basically owned the 3rd period - 21 shot attempts to 7, 9 shots on target to 1, 3 high danger chances to 1 - and if not for a couple of defensive gaffs could perhaps have won it in regulation.

Lohrei had a really solid game, maybe his best for Boston, topped by a smart goal, and while Gryz still can't buy a point, he was busy and tilting the ice in the B's favor in a way we haven't seen in a while. Wotherspoon also did ok. On the other hand, the less said about Lindholm and Shatty, the better.

So good and bad, and Boston's going to need a lot more of the former to beat the Rangers. They're capable of it, and NY are a very good team but they have their weaknesses. The Bruins can't get sucked into a wide-open pond hockey game against them like they did last time. They'll never keep up. Good structure, have your game plans and stick to them, limit/contain the rushes and don't allow your short-handed defense to get exposed on its own too often, try and cycle the puck and build some O zone pressure. In Toronto 2 weeks ago Monty had the Bs play the classic role and tactics of the underdog road team, and it worked, just. I expect he'll do the same again tonight, hopefully with similar results.

Good post. You hit most of my favorites.....One thing, one of these players is not like the others. Gainey was one of my favorites because of his drive, smarts and toughness, but he was also very dirty with the stick at times. My father loved Gainey also. He showed him more respect than any opponent outside of maybe the Gretzky Oilers fwiw.

They have to play a conservative "road game" at home. Indeed, that's their shot. I hope Shesterkin is off as well...

Certainly, some here were not Lady Bing candidates. I remain a huge Bob Gainey fan.

Three of my all-time favorites wouldn't make that list, on the ice anyway,

Ted Lindsay
Gordie Howe
Cam Neely

Well yeah, being a home game, I expect a little more assertiveness, especially for one of the commemorative nights featuring the Lunch Pail crew. Even this roster surely won't want to seem too passive in front of them. Who knows, might even spark some feistiness. But essentially the plan remains the same - for sure play hard and look to dictate terms where possible, but do it smart.

Hey, I like a little "old-time hockey from time to time, but must admit I greatly admire clean players.
Obviously, I greatly admire clean players as well.

But I like the dirty ones too. ✌️😌

A road game at home.

Usually doesn't happen. But you're right, that's the kind of game they might win.

I don’t hate the centennial jerseys against the O6 clubs, but would have rather seen era specific uniforms for each different generation being honored.
I'm surprised they didn't. Would of been a good way to fill Jacobs' and Adidas's wallet with the extra jerseys

Yeah, I’m not sure if it’s allowed under the current deal with Adidas.

Montreal wore several alternates as “one offs” for their centennial, but that was still Reebok, I believe.

I believe that with the current agreement, the teams can have one alternate and one “special” jersey that’s only worn a couple of times in addition to home and away.

Reverse retros were one offs for each of their two seasons only.

Would have been fun to see the FleetCenter whites make a rare appearance this year.

You should coach the B's!
