The sense I got was that the wider hockey world thought he was more of an above average 1OA closer to a Nico Hischier kinda guy. Great 1C but maybe not the franchise guy.
I consistently read that he would have been drafted #2 behind Bedard and was a top-10 prospect since the lockout.

Hype for Celebrini as a prospect was definitely high but not that high. Nowhere in the same stratosphere as Bedard's hype. Seemed a little below Eichel's hype.

A quick & dirty way to quantify this is to look at some poll results. Adam Fantilli who was coming off 27 points in 49 games as an NHL rookie got about a quarter of the vote against Celebrini:

Jack Hughes, who seemed to be settling in as an averageish 1st overall pick got about 2/3 of the vote against Celebrini:

Now, you can say the "bird in the hand" is what pushed Hughes over Celebrini, but but Bedard heading into his rookie year crushed the same Jack Hughes (who was coming off a stronger season than he was when he was polled against Celebrini), along with Elias Pettersson who was coming off a 100 point season at the time:

IMO Celebrini definitely got underrated just based on his numbers alone. 6' 180" with some of the best NCAA scoring we've ever seen from a player his age should have had him more hyped. Then, consider the type of game he plays, and the way he is an absolute pitbull out there...yeah he got underrated pretty hard. He's not an average 1st overall at all.

Well that was a rewarding game. A real preview of things to come with Eklund, Smith, Askarov, Zetterlund, and Macklin putting a stamp on this game.

I was happy for Kunin for finally burying a breakaway, so he can at least face himself in the mirror.

Hopefully Askarov can, like, find a bit of chill on those adventures into the trapezoid when the entire opposition is setup in the zone :eek3::pullhair:

Even with all the points, I thought Macklin’s best play was late in the third when he curled to the halfboards, attacked the slot, and then chipped an insane pass through two defenders to a wide open Zetterlund all alone in front of Rittich. Zetterlund didn’t score, but Jesus, I watched the pass like 6 times; the hands and touch on the pass where truly amazing.

I forget that most of y'all aren't watching Cuda games and therefore were surprised by Askarov's, uh, adventurous nature. I regret to inform you that That's Just How He Is.

You'll get a gaff out of it every once and a while, but it works out the vast majority of the time and it's really useful for stopping hard rimming attempts to regain possession and start breakouts. He's incredibly unique, but it really, really works.
