Honestly, when’s the last time we had a really bright offensive mind coaching the team that could structure a system to maximize possession and o-zone play? It’s probably Quenneville. We’ve had a lot of defensive tacticians (Hitchcock) and good motivators (Berube) but it’s been over 20 years since someone like Monty has coached this team which is exciting.

I was also impressed with Perunovich's play tonight. Every game he seems to be getting more comfortable, and gaining confidence. He really moved well around the O-Zone sending the puck to open teammates, and taking the odd shot when he had a good opening. I think he can really help the team's offence, and eventually play well enough on defence to not be a defensive liability.

I watched most of the game so I figured I'd write down what I saw and you all can poke and prod to see if you agree:

The whole game I thought the pace was really good. I think whenever we started to get our legs, we took a penalty, so even though we heavily outshot the Rangers (I'm sorry did I read that right?), I thought the first period was slow to get going because of the penalties. In general, I thought we back-checked hard and broke up a lot of plays that could've been dangerous whenever they entered the d-zone. Stick checking was overall good, lots of physicality, but the thing that was so clearly different was how insanely hard the guys forechecked tonight. It really felt like they outplayed or outmuscled the Rangers on over 60% of loose pucks in the corner if not more. I thought the offense was lively and taking chances and making nice plays. Lots of players going to the net to cause disruption. I don't know how sustainable that type of play is, but I'm hoping the guys buy in long term because it is very effective in today's game. Goes without saying, but Bolduc and Holloway were really good tonight among the rest of the guys.

Defense, despite what they look like right now, I thought was really good. There were points where some guys looked out of position, which is to be expected with a new coach even if he is familiar, but the point is that guys were covering the position if that happened or were quick to break up a play. Really didn't feel like I saw Suter or Joseph that much, but that's probably a good thing. Parayko was actually unreal tonight. Faulk looked very active and closer to the guy we saw when he was at his best here. Kessel got outworked on that first goal, but after that it seemed like he calmed down a bit and played fine (but he only played 11:32). Say what you want about Perunovich, I have really liked his game when he's been given a bit of a leash. He's going to blow coverage, he's not even close to the strongest, and he's not even Krug-lite right now. But despite that, I've seen him more often than not make a great play along the boards, outwork a lot of guys who maybe he shouldn't even have a chance against, and his passing is just very crisp and on the tape. If he develops into a mainstay 3rd pairing offensive defenseman for 2.5-3 mil, cool I don't care that's fine. So far this year, I've enjoyed watching him more than loathed it.

Hofer I don't even know right now dude. He's clearly got the skill and he showed it last year posting really impressive numbers in not a small amount of games. When I watch him, I'm thinking holy shit that was awesome or damn that save was really nice or the pass was weirdly on the tape? But despite all of that, I can't tell if his successes this year are because of getting bailed out on the defensive side, his actual ability, or his just dumb ridiculous athleticism. He moves around WAY too much. His technique is good, there's no question. He's agile no question. His glove hand is more than adequate. THE DUDE WON'T STOP MOVING. Overcommits more than Daniel Day-Lewis, and that's really hard to do. If he would just focus on being a bit more square to the play instead of trusting your athleticism too much, then he would no doubt be a starting goalie. For now, glad he got the win.

Buchnevich gets the feed from Sundqvist and easily skates it towards the empty net for the game-sealing gosal!!!! Blues lead 5-2!!!!
Surprised he shot it to be honest.

Bannister coached like he was scared and the team played like it was scared.

Confidence in your coach is a big deal. Great win tonight! Well deserved.

Rangers are crumbling. f*** Matt Rempe. I knew he was a tuffy but I didn't know he was one of those mouth-breathing cheap shot artist types.

Hopefully his trade value is increasing.

As much as I think this team needs a tank year, it was nice to see a well played game and Monty is a coach I really like.

I thought Bolduc, Schenn and Kyrou had really good games offensively.

I feel like I finally woke up from a nightmare. What a dream come true this game was. Obviously it's just one game, but within the first five minutes you could tell this team actually had a plan. For the last year plus I kept shaking my head and thinking, we're not really -this- bad are we? when Bannister was here. Again one game, but holy shit Bannister is a hockey terrorist who should never get another gig in the NHL again if this keeps up.

Bolduc finally got the monkey off his back. Hopefully he gets more playing time, I've been thinking he's got enough talent and drive to become a difference maker, he just needed some opportunity. I think his first penalty was soft as tissue, but his second was probably a bit deserved. I'll take it though if he turns into DP57 2.0.

I touched on this before the game, but Saad/Schenn/Kyrou simply do not work as a line. They cannot stay together. I don't know what the answer is, but they were our worst line tonight BY FAR, in a game we seriously dominated. We had an overall xGF% of 69% this game! The Saad/Schenn/Kyrou had a xGF% of 38.31 - they got caved in super hard.

It's nice to see our team score 5 goals without Robert Thomas getting a point.

Hofer had a really good game. He's so good with the puck, it's fun to watch him. Hopefully we get him so more starts, Binner needs to be rested for the playoffs :) :) :)

If were going to have a tank year it should have been last year. This year we have no mid round picks and the depth of this years draft class is weak. There were guys drafted in the mid 2nd round that would be 1st rounders this year.

Bolduc with 15 minutes of ice time tonight.
You love to see it.

He was good tonight for sure. Honestly, Perunovich has been playing really well for a while now. He will obviously always be limited by his size, but he can be a useful player. He's only played 86 games, there is still likely going to be improvement/development in his game.

Im with you, If we can get one more truly elite prospect in the pipeline, i will feel so much better about our future. Got plenty of prospects that project to fill a ton of roles, but man we need another shot at a true game changer.

There are clips with better video, but I love the Blues' announcers on this one. I remember this game well. It was the first game for new coach Ken Hitchcock. Tonight's game didn't have the same fireworks, but I felt hope the same way.

That was Davis Payne’s first game, not Hitchcock.

Thoughts on the game....

1) Happy for Bolduc. He has been a bit snake bitten but playing hard. Its good to see him rewarded with TOI and goals.

2) Don't get too excited about Monty. New coach Bump. Let's see if this lasts. The Blues scored 4 and put up 30+ shots to beat a good Dallas team in Bannister's first game as well.

3) That said, there were some definite positive signs. They didn't look afraid of offense. From comments from players, Bannister himself, and watching play it seemed he preached defense to a ridiculous degree. Defense is good, but you can't play scared of offense either.

4) I remember an argument about Rempe where I said there was no place for goons in the game and he is going to hurt someone trying to keep his spot in the lineup without any hockey skill. A bunch of people said I was soft and Rempe was fun. Was he fun today when he ran over Neighbours from behind? Would it have fun if Neigbours got seriously hurt? I stand by my assessment, a goon like Rempe has no place in the NHL.

Watching this game makes my "no way these players actually make these stupid forced passes like this if they aren't being coached to" comment feel so much more correct.
They still did too much of that but not as much for sure. The difference in this game was the forecheck and the D being aggressive in the o-zone.

They made some stupid plays but they went and got the puck back when they did.

New coach bump is real but I think the thing that makes me excited by Monty is his track record of building strong foundation of play. I made a comment after Bannister's last game that he felt like the Davis Payne of this era and the hope is that Monty will be the Hitchcock. Say what you want about Hitch but the structures and effects of his coaching long outlasted his tenure as head coach.

I didn't mean to imply that he won't be great for the franchise. But this game is not evidence of that one way or another. A coach can't fly in that morning or the day before or whatever, have a morning skate and suddenly he fixed the team and made meaningful change.

The players are playing hard for the new coach, or shocked and scared cause their play cost the old coach, but it's not a indication of anything sustainable. As I said, the true test is if they can keep playing hard and keep showing improvements.
