Man, Rusty really gifted us the two points on the Jenner goal. A belated parting gift, perhaps?

Not a clean second period at all, but the boys got the job done. A good team will scrap out victories even when they don't play their best.

Anybody know if Anderson is okay? Didn't see him on the ice after he got hurt blocking that shot.

He's played his regular 5 shifts in the 3rd, the last one with 4 minutes remaining in the game.

Also interesting that for the last 37 seconds Torts used the Murray-Jones pairing to prevent the lead, Werenski didn't play at the end of the game.

Hey Jackets fans, was doing some random team draft browsing for fun and saw this Nutivaara kid was a 7th round pick in last years draft!

What's he like?

He's alright for a Bottom 6 defender. At the start of the season, he was abused like a human pylon cone or making some unadvisable passes, but he's been getting better throughout the year in my opinion. Doesn't make as much obviously stupid decisions. But overall, he's a bit on the small side but likes to move the puck up the ice with his passing/skating. What I like about his game- Not afraid to join the offensive play or shoot it on the net. There's been a couple games he's been aggressive and trying to get points/goals. I think he's lucky to have found a good match for the style of his play, which is what Tortorella is trying to install here. I think he can be a steady Top 6 defenseman in the NHL.

Two things I knew (not really, but...) would happen in last night's game.

1) Started Varlamov in fantasy, so was pretty sure CBJ would get the win.

2) Heard on the pre-game that some kid was making his NHL debut and I said, offhand, to no one, "Will probably get a goal then."

What is in store for the CBJ next game, Wonder Johtava?

Hey Jackets fans, was doing some random team draft browsing for fun and saw this Nutivaara kid was a 7th round pick in last years draft!

Here is a feature piece from the Columbus Dispatch.

In the hope of providing additional context;

Nutivaara was a 7th round pick in the June 2015 draft. He was 21 at the time he was chosen, so he had not been selected when he became age eligible to be drafted and had not signed a FA contract previously.

He played last season in Europe as he did not feel his game had the maturity and development to yet translate and contribute to North America or the NHL. Like many Europeans that come to North America, he is still getting used to the smaller ice surface.

He was not anticipated to make the team at any point. Even as final cuts approached, it was widely speculated that he would be returned to the AHL Cleveland Monsters. And yet, when the final team was announced, he was still standing and Cody Goloubef, on a one-way contract, was returned to Cleveland. Goloubef was just traded earlier this week to Colorado for Ryan Stanton (AHL on an two-way contract).

Most of the commentary, coverage, and analysis pieces written about Nutivaara include something about; 1. Coach Tortorella likes the way he is willing to quickly move the puck up the ice; 2. is not afraid to take a puck-moving chance or opportunity; 3. does make some mistakes but quickly recovers; 4. has not shown a penchant for continually making the same mistakes; 5. is quickly adjusting to the North American game; 6. has held his own as a 3rd pair D-man and can play on the 2nd PK unit.

The odds are that less than 50% of the players drafted in the 7th round ever play a game in the NHL. The odds drop even further when you think about a 7th round pick playing NHL games in the first 3 years after being drafted. Many of those situations would be a talent starved or injury depleted team being forced to play a 7th round pick in the 3 years since his draft - especially a D-man.

My point is that Jarmo K and his scout team obviously saw something in a late blooming youngster (currently 22 yo) and took a chance. After last night's 22nd game he has 22 games of NHL experience, for a team that currently resides in a playoff spot.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have not been forced to give Nutivaara (currently 1-2-3 and 2 Pims) a 3rd pairing (5-6) role because of lack of talent or depth. Most nights Dalton Prout has been the healthy scratch (7th) (8 NHL games this year 0-0-0 with 8 Pims). The Columbus Blue Jackets have been forced to give him a role because he has contributed and shown more promise thus far than Dalton Prout (64 NHL games last year 3-6-9 102 Pims) and Cody Goloubef (43 NHL games last year 1-7-8 and 20 Pims).

Anyone else think that Sedlak is kind of disappearing in the past few games?

Yeah. I've been saying this for a little bit. He is just over his head in the NHL. But if Torts insists on keeping Gagne as a 4th line wing, I'm not sure who'd assume the role of 4th line C now.

I agree. I thought this was actually a noticeably good game for him. Very close to his first goal.

Also, anyone else catch Foligno's water bottle explode as they cut to commercial in the 2nd?

He's had a handful of prime chances that he's squandered, even missed a couple open cages. He even admits he is still adjusting to the NHL game, so it doesn't come as a surprise. Even if I don't think he is ready for the NHL, he is holding his own, playing *mostly* mistake free hockey and the team is winning, so I will stop complaining.

My team booked ice time last night so I didn't see the game so I can't comment on his play last night. I did, however, see the water bottle incident of which you speak

Ehh. I think he's played his role well. He's not going to put up points but he's being an annoyance and grinding down the other team. No issues here

He had a terrible turnover in the D zone last night, but other than that he hasn't been on my radar much. He hit a post last night if I recall properly. Overall he's ok I guess.

I bet Hartnell unscrewed the lid while Foligno was on the ice. :naughty:

Sedlak reminds me of Karlsson from last year... not producing offensively but, plays with a high motor and does a decent job.
