If the 2024-25 Bruins are going to claw themselves out of an early-season malaise, it’s likely going to fall on star players like David Pastrnak, Jeremy Swayman, Charlie McAvoy, and Brad Marchand to lead the charge.

But on Thursday night, Marchand was quick to give credit to fourth-line forward Mark Kastelic — he of just 20 games played in a Bruins sweater and with 32 career points on his NHL ledger — as the one who dragged a desperate roster into the fight against Utah.

Kastelic may not have factored into the scoresheet in Boston’s 1-0 victory over Utah. But the 25-year-old forward gave the Bruins the spark they needed by dropping the gloves twice with Robert Bortuzzo — setting the tone in a must-win matchup at TD Garden.

“Huge. That emotion and energy and physicality that he can bring. He changed the tide of the game,” Marchand said of Kastelic. “Got us feeling emotionally engaged, and you need that throughout the course of the year. Guys like him, you never really, truly understand how valuable they are. They’re the guys that really carry the team in the toughest times and in playoff time.

“You always see it — depth guys and those emotional guys. They have the ability to change the course of a game in a physical shift or a tough shift, and the way that he plays the game the right way — he’s a guy that we can look to be a leader and a guy that we can emulate with the way that he plays emotionally and wears his heart on his sleeve. He did a great job tonight.”

Kastelic has already been one of the few bright spots on an otherwise underachieving Bruins roster this fall. Along with adding plenty of thump further down the lineup (79 hits in 20 games), he’s chipped in with three goals and seven points.

But with the Bruins already in need of a lift in Joe Sacco’s first game as Boston’s interim head coach, Kastelic provided a jolt to the Garden crowd after trading a few punches with Bortuzzo on just his second shift of the evening.

Bortuzzo jumped off the bench and immediately grappled with Kastelic — with the duo exchanging a few blows before dropping to the frozen sheet. The second round easily went to Kastelic in the middle period — with the 6-foot-4 forward dropping the Utah defenseman to the ice with a couple of heavy hooks.

“Just from playing hard,” Kastelic said of the reasoning behind his two scraps with the 6-foot-4 Bortuzzo. “The first one just happened and the second one was just being passionate about the game and not trying to let anybody push me around. So, I think that’s why you kind of saw that.”

“I definitely feel like the guys in this room respect that a lot, which I appreciate,” Kastelic said of dropping the gloves.” And I’m just trying to make an impact the best I can in any way, shape or form.

“And I definitely feel the energy from the crowd and the fans, and I mean, we got the win, and that’s the most important thing. And hopefully I kind of fueled the guys a little bit, but at the same time, it’s just kind of part of my game.”

The Bruins have a long way to go if they want to quiet doubts about the team’s ability to right the ship.

But when Boston needed it the most, its fourth-line center delivered at a critical juncture of the team’s up-and-down season.

“I think everybody was just excited,” Kastelic said of starting anew amid a coaching change this week. “Just trying to kind of have a clean-slate approach to it. And I think that’s something — a little bit of energy has been lacking in the past.

“So I think [I’m] trying to make a conscious effort to bring extra energy and positivity and motivation to each and every game, and play with a lot of passion and be proud to wear the B.”
I just want one game with a Kastelic, Veil, Kopeke fourth line. I can imagine those 3 feeding off each other’s energy. Probably would be a fun sight to see if only for one game.

Bortuzzo jumped Kastelic at the end of a shift while fresh off the bench. That must be what led to the 2nd fight?

Regardless it seems Kastelic is the only candidate for 7th player at this rate as others have said. Good for him and the fans.

Ottawa is a terrible team of individuals. Perhaps they need a new coach. Years of Buffalo style non support for goalies.
The bold was so lame by Bortuzzo.

Kastelic was running around yes but nothing cheap. Just finishing his checks.

And as you said, he jumps off the bench fresh and challenges Kastelic whose finishing his shift.

Those of you who panned the Linus trade, I dunno man, I dunno. NEVER underestimate goalie Bob. That's a losing proposition. That we might get 6+ years of Nasty Kasti now is just the icing.

If this coaching staff has teeth, they put Korpi in nets vs Detroit. This is a meritocracy, full stop. Ice to those who EARN it. There's a back to back Tue-Wed and you can give Sway either of them, don't care. But Korpi gets Detroit. His confidence matters too.

I feel for Linus too btw, 3.00 and .887, he's fighting it. But he'll be fine.

Cassidy and Monty both were too soft from a coaching system perspective

Cassidy was a better X’s and O’s Guy (he wins game 5 against Florida in 23) and Monty is a better youth coach.

This team needs something more than both at this point so we’ll see how it goes
Cassidy got outcoached by the same guy that outcoached Monty on that same 2019 SC run for the Blues. and yes Im talking about that bozo behind the clown show in Toronto. difference is one guy learned from it and the other brought the same deer in the headlights approach to his next opportunity.

Good game. Nice to be able to read the PGT the day after and not feel the need to bitch.

Yeah it was one game, and yes there are things still to improve, and yes Utah is crap (but they were better than us last game. There are also a lot of crap teams to feast on), but skating and bringing energy like last night will win you more games than not. At least we know they have it in them, and more importantly, so do they (as Marchand alluded to). Keep playing the right way and the goals will come. Go Korpi! Go Bruins!

And congrats to Big Bad Big Sac Sacco!

Obviously a better effort last night.

But they still can't finish, and they still handle the puck like it's a grenade, especially when approach a blue line.

Some changes on the power play, didn't drop pass back to forward for zone entry. Still, 1 for 7 isn't great, but good enough last night.

Marchand and Pasta continue to have trouble protecting the puck. Pasta seemed to get less ice time 5 on 5.

Korpisalo, with the shutout, now has a .911 save percentage and 2.38 goals against. Both respectable.

Pasta on 32 goal pace he needs to be putting up Ovechkin numbers for this team

Was hoping the ENG would give some momentum. He is in a tough place where he must create the offense and be the offense for this team.

However no excuse for none of his PP one timers to not score, that simply needs to change.

What I wanted last night was for Freddie to step and throw them since Kastelic already had two. If Kastelic hit three he automatically gets tossed for three in a game rule.

Kastelic didn't even mind later in the 3rd during the 4th line scrum. A true Bruin! Would there be a suspension these days for the 3 fights I wonder?

Yeah he was.

Giveaways are such a subjective stat. Calculated differently in all 32 rinks.

That may be.

But all his teammates played in the same buildings as he did.

And it looked to me like he was a turnover machine, especially after the first few games of the season.

Like Korpisalo, he's been just fine against the Utahs/Phillys/Seattles/ of the NHL.

The game on Monday was his first stinker vs. a team lower in the standings but CBJ can score despite the names on paper. Posted a 7 spot on TB last night. have scored 6 goals five times, and the 5 spot on Monday. It's defensively that has cost CBJ wins and points (68 goals allowed, 1 less than Boston). People just see the names and assume automatically that CBJ suck but offensively they don't suck.

Other than Game 1 (vs. FLA) and Game 5 (vs. Colorado) Swayman has gotten all the toughest starts. Dallas twice, Florida, Carolina, Toronto, etc. Some flat out brutal defensive efforts mixed in there.

Swayman will be fine, Korpisalo has been good but somewhat untested against top teams. We really won't know how much Sacco has improved the team defensively until they start playing some of the better teams. Even under Monty they were keeping the low scoring teams off the board.

The offense is still a dogs breakfast. At least they passed it better last night. That empty net sequence at the end defines the Bruins season thus far.
They aren’t ready yet to play against good teams , hopefully later in the season they can be . I didn’t notice Zadarov in a good way last night. Was his ice time cut ? The Bruins have a back to back coming up next week so both goalies will be playing regardless . It’s just a hunch but I give Swayman the start tomorrow. I think/ hope Pasta is going to wake up tomorrow and score a couple.

I didn’t notice Zadorov in a bad way and that is a good thing, they all played a better game aI thought, inability to score remained a big issue, but atleast they did have a lot more scoring chances.Utah is a crap team, but Baby Steps anyway.

Is it time to just run with Korpi at this point? Feel like we give it to the hot hand if we want to try and turn this season around.

this team cant finish.
we should give lysell or mcglaughlin a shot.
they both can at least shoot the puck

What happened to the thread about Korpisalo? Did it get deleted? I went back 10 pages and couldn't find it.
I was looking for it to. Wanted to find all the posts I made.

Since it doesn't seem to be available, let me remind everyone of my position at the time.

I said he'd be a stud, that his $3M would be a steal, and that he'd probably outperform Swayman by a significant margin.

The rest of you bozos were bitching about his historical numbers being shit. Do better, you.

I only saw the second half of the game, but they seemed much more content to get the puck out simply if there was no play to be had. And they seemed much more willing to take any shot that presented itself. Just those two changes will put points in the point column.

I said it last game, but a Bruins team where Zacha shoots 5 times is a different team. Now if we can get Freddy up from 0 shots, we're on to something. He's gotta touching pucks inside the dots. Has to.

You might have seen that in Don Cherry days, but those days are gone.

Another thing people should have learned by now is never get too excited about goaltenders going on a hot streak to the point of paying them stupid money and giving them stupid term....

Swayman will figure it out. Still doesn't mean he's worth $8.25. Korpisalo will have his off nights too. Its the way of the world when it comes to goaltenders.

The problem is you are paying the other guy over 8 million, who is going to step up and make that decision, interpretation, who has the balls to make that decision.

I liked Zadorov's game last night. Just kept it simple.

Ya but there's a looooong contract ahead. Right now we have a short time to save the season. Sway can survive losing a few games if it means getting the guys on a roll.

Momentum in sports is real, obviously. We saw what losing your confidence does to a club. Getting it back can be just as powerful. Specially when you trust your goalie to make a big save.
