It's pretty normal. If a US arena was watching Canada against Finland (or any other team), they would be pulling hard for whatever team was against Canada.

That's how it always is when the U.S. plays in Canada. Whoever we are playing against is their new favorite team.

There's a double whammy here.

1) If the fans are like me, I like seeing the underdogs do well. The americans are usually the favourites whenever they play.

2) Its the only nation Canada shares a border with. Its a natural rivalry.

I think point #1 supersedes point #2 though. If the US were a massive underdog like the Kazakhs, reactions would be different.
