The best thing that Chytil did that period wasn't scoring a goal. It was the shift about half way through the period where he won a faceoff, got possession, worked the puck to the top of the circle, and got a shot on goal. I feel like Chytil puts out enough volume shooting that he'll net them so long as he can stay on the ice, and winning draws, protecting the puck, and being defensively responsible are the things that will enable him to stay on the ice. And perhaps not shockingly, he's pacing to play almost 15 minutes tonight.

He became a volume shooter sometime over the course of last season. He morphed his game to being simpler and geting stuff toward the net.

Vesey was a great addition. More offensive upside than Hunt, more reliable PKer, and I'm actually okay with him playing top 9.
Signings like this will become more and more important as our young studs age out of ELC's and or bridges and need pay raises. Can't afford 1.5-3 million or more for bottom 6 vets as you have to pay kids.

Saw it with Motte and Rooney finding different teams this summer, being replaced by Vesey and Carpenter essentially for 1.2 the price. Next up will be Goodrow and Reaves will either have to see his pay hit the league min or he will see another roster. Blais as good as gone.

PTO's and 850K quality vets to fill the holes that aren't the core + the kids. Veseys just the start. May have to pay him more, and its only early, but I'd bet you could get another cheap deal out of him to stay in NY. We traded him after he commited to us as a college FA and he still came back without a guaranteed contract and worked his bag off until he got one. I'd bet he wants to stick around and would take less to do so.

THAT is the culture you wnat to build. A place where you top guys salary fall in line (like Tampa) and a place where guys want to take less to play (also Tampa). Worked for them, a la 2 Cups and a SCF.

So I ask ...

WHY NOT US???

As far as Trochek being a better fit than Strome, I agree. It seems chemistry can come for sure, but he does a little more of the workman stuff Strome wouldn't. Strome relied a lot on key scoring and mostly vibing with Bread. Don't want to say he was a dog but I like what I see out of Vinny a lot more.
