I think too many are basing what Mario has done in the last calendar year and forgetting what he did the first 6-7 years. I don’t think we’ve had a coach or style in place since Deboer that ever prioritizes fixing the defense or their bad habits. But hey, we all have our own opinions.
It's not just the last calendar year, he's always been like this, we just hoped he'd develop. He hasn't, and he's 26 and expensive. He's not going to get any better - at this point, physically, it's all downhill.

Tell me with a straight face you think Goodrow has given his all every shift. Because he's been ass since game 1 and if this is the best he can do then he shouldn't be in the NHL and Grier is a moron for taking him on.
I think he gives effort, there's just no skill that comes with it and the one goal he scored was a fluke bounce. Did see a nice backhand pass highlight from him to Ferraro for Ferraro's first career NHL goal though while I was looking up other stuff on Ferraro, but have never seen anything like that this season.

The problem for Will Smith is that he's been playing for so long now with Goodrow, who's been getting worse as the season has gone on and is now playing at a 4th line talent level. Then there's Kunin, who has been better, but is more at a 3rd line level except he's very bad at certain things that could really help Smith out (namely puck control/possession).

It's just unfortunate that Smith is starting to look more confident but rarely has an opportunity to do anything in the offensive zone. You saw last night, early in the 3rd, he got one shift with different linemates and immediately helped set them up for a shot or two. This isn't rocket science!

Mario has only been in the league for 6 years and was only serviceable for the first 2, he has progressively gotten worse every single season since 2022

The other problem is he's under contract next year, and the Sharks have an LD logjam. Mukh will hopefully be up, and I would bet on one of Dickinson or Cagnoni making it. Walman is there obviously as well. I don't really care if Vlasic and Thrun sit in the pressbox most of the year unless Thrun shows a lot of improvement in which case he needs minutes.

So where does Ferraro fit in? Is he gonna play his off side on top of all the other issues? I bet he gets traded either at the TDL or this summer.

Ferraro on a better team where he's not asked to do more than he should be asked to do would excel. Deeper teams would excel with him. Vegas playing him on the 3rd pairing would be ideal for them. Same with Florida, Edmonton and Dallas.
I don’t think the Sharks are asking too much of him. He was playing less this year than the previous two and has a better forward group in front of him. So far this season he has looked even worse than the last couple seasons.

It’s the fundamentals that he cannot do, and it’s not a matter of playing too many minutes. He is soft in front of net, goes into battles on the wall with his stick up (allowing opposition easier escape paths), and has no vision for breakout passes and defaults to “up the wall and out” regardless if it’s cut off. For that reason he wouldn’t excel anywhere, in my opinion.

If there was any actual trade talk last season, they should have made the deal - but I’m starting to think there were no offers for him.

I'd play Mario at 4th line wing.

Currently he’s our second heaviest minute muncher at ES at 17 per game (Ceci inexplicably is 19) and our third heaviest PK killer (and, ironically our best d-man in terms of GA/60 shorthanded). It is true he played more last year but when teamed with Emberson those two were far and away our best pairing. I just found that interesting.

Dallas’ bottom pairing is bad. Lundqvist is a useless d-man playing almost by default.
I agree that Lundkvist is pretty useless but I don’t think they should think Ferraro is the answer there. They got Heiskanen, Lindell, and Harley on the left side. They’d probably want Ceci more than Ferraro.
