Tavares played 9 seasons with the Islanders and they made the playoffs twice (one second round?). They had bad management and were going through a rebuild, again. I understand why Tavares wanted to leave. If the Sharks put Celebrini through that much crap, they'll deserve him leaving. Mind you, I'd be irate as anyone!
Grier is going to have prioritize getting a winger who can play with Mack like a Rantanen and McKinnon type situation

Do you think Warso will be like yeah his numbers are terrible and he is a concrete block out there. He sucks and I hate him?
He says, probable:

1) Vague nonsense (e.g. their metrics say otherwise)
2) It's a team-wide problem
3) It's reflective of his minutes

Plausible:
1) Ferraro is going through a rough patch but has shown that he can be better
2) Team + Ferraro is adjusting to a new system
3) Appeal to authority

Possible:
1) Ferraro's the best option they have
2) He just admits it's a concern
3) Off-ice stuff outweighs on-ice deficiencies

You won't know until you ask. Mike Grier has been extremely candid...

Report from the tank:
  • We all know Macklin's got that dog in him. No need to add much here, 3rd NHL game was far and away his best. I think the thing I love is that he does something noteworthy every shift - whether it's forcing a turnover, a body on a guy, or an OZ/NZ skill or effort play. Such a lovable player.
  • Smitty had a fairly invisible game. This game I think, versus a very good and fast team, definitely exposed his line and linemates. Still, he didn't have too many glaring errors and actually the few times he flashed were on really hard backchecks and effort plays, which is great. Like others said, I do want to see him with Granlund (and on PP1 but they are keeping Wenny up there to win the faceoff).
  • Thompson flashed positively again. God, how awesome if he hits?
  • Hockey stat cards say Thrun had a great game but that was definitely a Secondary Thrun game. Although didn't look awful.
  • Ferraro and Rutta, what else needs to be said? Had 3-4 chances to clear or break the puck out on (I believe) 2nd or 3rd goal against and failed as usual, throwing a grenade up the wall.
  • The DZ system of giving the other guys the perimeter, and an essentially free cycle on the half-wall/at the point, works in a narrow sense - for 30 seconds, we keep people out of the tough scoring areas - but same as last year, we constantly get hemmed in, force no turnovers or throw the puck up the wall (see previous bullet), and end up with a 1:30+ minute shift that ends in a goal. I know it's mostly a personnel problem and if we were more aggressive we'd probably get burned inside, but man, is it a tough system to watch at times.
  • Boy, it's sad to see the tank right now, but I know it'll fill back up once we are a winning team again.
  • By complete chance/good fortune, I will be in attendance in both NJ and PHI, first time seeing three games in a row in maybe 8 years???

Though, shout out to the most impactful player on tonight's game: Mario Ferraro

What a hunk of dog shit his performance was tonight, he actively made his team worse every time he stepped on the ice, to say he provided no value would give him too much positive credit because he was the single biggest reason this was an unwinnable game, the hockey stat card for this one is sure to be another master class from him

Trade that guy f***ing yesterday, a boat anchor is more buoyant than this absolute black hole of a player
That pass to no one around the boards really gave me the red ass

Coach: I'm gonna take Eklund away from our play driving centers so I can stack the top line

Also Coach: I'm not getting the results from Eklund that I expect, it must be his fault

Wario has some details to iron out for sure, he's mismanaging Eklund pretty badly right now, he's tailor-made to play with Celebrini, the overstacked top line needs to end so all the young guys get the support they need

The guy has decided that the best plan is to have neither Granlund or Will Smith center the other two Lunds but have Wennberg do it. Now that was an amazing move he put on to win the Columbus game, but that is making Eklund and Zetterlund offensively impotent.

That is a bad plan.

He's trying to spread the offensive wealth on a roster with no wealth to spread, yet he stacks all of the defensive responsibilities on the shoulders of a player who has spent all year demonstrating that he absolutely cannot shoulder the burden

This coach is fascinating to the point of being unreadable, if I'm being generous I think he knows this roster is terrible and has no shot on most nights so he's just flailing desperately in the hopes that some combination of these terrible players becomes greater than the sum of their parts, if he thinks he's making smart moves it's pretty concerning

@Sheng Peng you've got to ask the coaching staff about a Ferraro's terrible numbers and inability to move the puck. It's glaringly obvious to anyone watching.
I don’t know why you’re expecting Sheng to ask any questions on this. Even before this game he posted an article defending Ferraro and Rutta and why they’re actually good (in summary, Ferraro tries hard and Rutta has good reach).

Ever since he got the gig writing stuff for NBC Sports Bay Area he has rarely written anything critical. Hell, he was arguing Quinn was a good coach and calls to fire him were premature - until Quinn was fired and then all of sudden it was the right move to make.

Random stat for the night which should surprise no one. The Wild had 9 high danger scoring chances at 5v5 - Ferraro was on for 5 of them.

What a good game tonight. Celebrini scored 2 goals, one of those is a beauty, and the Sharks lost. That's a perfect outcome. Celebrini could potentially be a better scorer than I anticipated. The quickness in his skating is elite level.

The power of effort and its effect on optics is unique.

I think this might be the case but with much more tact and strategy behind it. Remember, the goal of this year is development, not winning games. BUT, winning games helps development too. So it's actually not a bad strategy to try and throw shit at the wall and see what gets the best combination of development and winning.

The way he attacks the play is so interesting and unique. He is able to get the puck and move it at some novel angles that I don't think other players even consider the puck could go where it does. He also just makes good plays SO often. even when he's pressured and has to get rid of it and turn it over, it goes in the absolute best place, maybe just over the line, or in a place where other players can get info defensive positions, etc.

Granlund has not been great the last couple games.
From his stint in Pittsburgh to now it shows he really is a Center. He has been horrible on the wing and thrives when he is playing Center. It’s why I’m hesitant to resign him since between Celebrini, Smith, and Wennberg next season there is not room for a guy in the top 9 that can only play C.

Scheduled loss unfortunately, but Celebrini showed why he was the 1st overall draft pick. Truly excited to have him here.

Ferraro is really a question mark for me, we've seen the same tape now for 5 years and it's really starting to get real frustrating.
He's a captain and a half off the ice, but on the ice he really could use some time in the press box to see the bigger picture.

Macklin looks as dangerous as Bedard in the offensive and neutral zones, while also being excellent in the defensive zone. He is such a player! Eklund-Celebrini-Martone would be a ridiculous two-way first line.

Also, let's get Granlund and Mack on separate lines. I'd put Zetts and Smith on Granlund's wings and Goodrow and Kunin/Goose/Cardwell on Wennberg's. Grundstrom-Sturm-Kunin/Delly as the fourth line.

Goose wasn't amazing, but I think Goodie and Wennberg have the size and defensive play where they'd all compliment each other. I don't hate Kunin, but would like to see Smith have more offensive linemates.

Also, man does this team miss Walman. Walman-Ceci, Ferraro-Liljigren, and Thrun-Thompson are our best six I think. That's still probably worst in the NHL, but it's world's better than last year. Hopefully we can get an upgrade on Ceci in the offseason. Muk takes Thrun's spot as third pairing LHD by midyear.

With Dickinson unable to play in the AHL next year, wouldn't be surprised if he forces the issue with Ferraro. Maybe you have Muk, Ferraro, and Dickinson each play about 60 games next year?

At this point, it seems like Warso is actively avoiding giving Smith competent linemates, which makes it feel like a punishment.
