If we lose this game, it is still possible to win the next 80 in a row on the way to one of the greatest season in history and a Stanley Cup.
Which game would you like back from last Oct/Nov? For me it would be the 3-2 loss to Montreal. Or the 5-4 loss to Ottawa. Guess what would have happened if they got the extra point in either game?

My point is this is a game they need to win and should win.

The Pens have been terrible defensively and lead the league in total GA. If the Wings are to snap out of this offensive funk, no better squad to do it against.
Malkin came forward and apologized to the fans over their last game and said they'd do better, I have a feeling the Pens are gonna come out flying tonight with something to prove. Hope i'm wrong.

My concern as well. Last time we played these guys they were coming off a 6-0 drubbing from the Rangers and then came out of LCA with a win the next night. They lost 5-1 to Carolina last week and then walked out of the Caps arena the next night with a win.

They want to spend the entire game in the offensive zone and will over aggressively forecheck to do it. Play sloppy in your own zone, could be a bad night. So look for them to attack the Chia Petry pairing with vigor tonight.

At some point the 1st line has to be broken up, if this does not improve. The rest of the lineup hardly generates, let alone produces. To get some ppl going i'd probably try:

Tank - Cap - Ray
Cat - Kasper - JT
Bergy - Copp - Kane
Tarasenko should have been given a chance on the first line by now with 71 & 23

Raymond seems to want to be Mitch Marner and has no interest in being a goal scorer, and Tarasenko has scored goals in this league. His pace of play is obviously a concern, but I think putting him with 71 & 23 could maybe work.

I like your lines, maybe try Cat & Kane with Kasper though

I am still confused on the state of this team. Are they a playoff team or are we tanking
neither

with the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NHL entry draft, the Detroit Red Wings are proud to select (insert hard working 2-way forward with great character here).

"Tonight in Pittsburg both teams are smarting, and looking to bounce back from embarrassing losses in their last games. It remains to be seen who will bounce higher - a slightly deflated Winged Wheel from Detroit or the stub-winged Penguins on their home ice."

EXPLAIN:

In April you can't get back points lost from Oct/Nov, see last year on 16 April.
Games in November are only "must wins" to you and fans like you who already have one foot over the edge. It's great you pointed out that you can't get points from November in April. Thank you for that tidbit. Wisdom like that just doesn't come around often enough.

Using your logic, every game is a "must win" game, and that's patently absurd.

I honestly think that everyone is just making an argument on semantics. It's a little pedantic sure, but the point is that we can lose this game and be fine. Every win/loss matters the same in a larger sense. At the end of the day, you need 90-100 points to make the playoffs and how you got them doesn't matter. One more win in November could be the difference in April.

But during the season every win/loss doesn't have the same impact on your odds of making the playoffs at the time of the game. If you lose the first game of the season, your odds of making the playoffs almost don't change. You're likely to be about to make up a 2 point deficit over 81 games.

If you have 3 games in hand/left, and you're 5 points out of the playoffs, every game for the rest of the season is a must win. At that point a loss takes you to 0% chance of making the playoffs. That's what the term is reserved for.

You can stretch it a bit by claiming it's 'realistically' a must win. That's like if you're 4 points out with 4 games left for you and the leader. A loss probably doesn't result in you immediately being mathematically eliminated, but it makes it really unlikely that you come back even if you win out. With more than ~15 games left, you're stretching it too far.

Today is just "a game we should win."

I have to say that this is the worst scheduling for the Wings I can remember in a while, and it's not helping anything. Imagine if they were playing good hockey consistently and had a few more wins - we'd be screaming here about this stutter-stop schedule killing momentum. As it is...

I've been disappointed in season starts before, but never bored. Now I'm bored. They're not playing well, not playing interesting hockey, not winning, not playing different teams, and not easy to "get into" because of the scheduling.

Bleah.

Maybe I should challenge somebody to a limerick fight to get us back into the game here. Who wants to go?
There once was a goalie named Jarry
With moves like an old school Atari
He was slicker than grease
Floppin round in his crease
But tonight he wont start and Im sorry.
