Playoff checks aren't a thing. Losing in the first round nets each player less than $20,000. They're getting paid their regular salary through the end of the season regardless of what happens tonight or in the next couple weeks.

So I'm still waiting for a

Owner will lose 10’s of millions in revenue if we miss.

Is he better than Merrill? Yes. Is he NHL ready to play in game 82 when the season is on the line. No one knows until he sees the big lights. You think any dman wants to play with another dman they haven’t practiced with yet in the biggest game of the year? These guys have been together for 9 months. Win or lose together. No kid just out of a dorm room belongs in deciding the season. The post season is a new beginning and Zeev and can prove he earned at spot in practice leading up the postseason. He doesn’t have franchise savior aura so he isn’t going to get a NHL spot in 82.

If they lose tonight, heads need to roll.

Nothing will happen, because it's not about f***ing winning, it's about making sure players like Merrill and Bogosian are comfortable in their country club.

I have faith that at least the fans will let them hear it if they come out as uninspired as they were against the Flames in that important game last week.

I'm fine not throwing in a 19-year old fresh out of college (who's main trait that he needs to work on is limiting his risky plays) in our most important game on the year. I'll just leave it at that.

It's true that Jon Merrill is a defensive stalwart and rarely makes mistakes so good point

He at least understands the system. Buium hasn't even had his first full practice. And its not fair on Buium either - how much pressure to put on the kid - first NHL game, zero practice, most important game of the year.

Jon Merrill understanding the system doesn't seem to matter when your only argument against Buium is "what if he makes a mistake"

I’m at least somewhat curious what series of events would follow if we miss the playoffs.

Maybe we'll get lucky and Merrill will get his mullet caught in a weird garbage disposal accident. Thereby they'll have no choice...

...but to just do something even more stupid by calling up some AHL plug and playing him instead of Buium anyway.

Its the only argument that is multifaceted.
1) How much pressure you giving to the kid? He doesn't understand the system, his role, his expectations. And if he screws up, I don't want to start off his career with that type of hit.

2) From a coaching point of view, do you want them to spend time trying to figure out your lines within 48 hours to how to accommodate a 19-year old that, again doesn't understand what the coach wants?

3) From the teammates point of view, whoever is paired up with Buium, is it fair for Bogosian to learn the tendencies from a new college 19-year old kid? Will that mean his partner will have to play more passive to make sure?

That's a lot of adjustments to keep in mind for game that has zero space for error. And for a kid that is just coming out of college and won't be at full steam in his first game, he'll play like a fresh rookie, like most do.

If he's not playing him tonight, he sure as hell won't play him in the playoffs (if they make it.) It'll be like Boldy when we played Vegas. And we could have used Boldy.

We can lose this game 15-0 and still make the playoffs, to be clear. I wouldn't call that zero space for error.

But sure, let's go with zero space for error.

What if Buium makes a mistake? A hypothetical, of course.

We know Merrill will make mistakes, he's been doing it all season, he did it last game against Vancouver.

What if Buium gets some of the opportunities Merrill gets, and generates offense for a team who struggles immensely to generate offense? What if he gets the puck to his teammates for scoring chances instead of turning the puck over and shooting it into an opposing player and allowing an odd man rush?

Jon Merrill better have the best game of his life tonight, that's for sure.

I'm not going down this hypothetical route. Let's not overthink this.
As much as I want to see him play, again, I'm fine not throwing in a 19-year old with zero practice, first NHL game ever, for a time the coaches do not have time to try to acclimate a new player, young or old. I just don't think it's reasonable on any party (Buium, the coach, the players) when all hands on deck.

I'm sure I'm not going anywhere with this debate as people are very emotionally invested in this - not just on Buium but judging on recent threads of Hynes and BG. So I'm stepping out of this topic and will just comment on the game itself.

Buddy you started it, you're still leaning on it. Your entire argument is predicated on the hypothetical scenario that Buium can't handle playing tonight and could make a mistake.

All I did was flip it.

Side note, I really love when you do this. You start a discussion and then when people discuss back you just dismiss it as emotional and move on as if you're some objective source of truth and logic. It's funny.

I don't really mind Buium sitting this game if he's 100% playing in game 1.

But that feels like a big if.

After this talk about Merrill, it would be so Minnesota to lose 2-1 with Merrill scoring the only goal.
Heads would explode…..

I'm fully expecting him to have a great game knowing what's on the line and that he should probably be sitting.

Everyone getting pretty fired up about a kid not playing in the biggest game of the year after two practices. Pitchforks and torches out and people bitching about the coach. Calm down. If the Wild shit the bed it will be the usual suspects.

Love how this has devolved from hockey talk to "i'm mad at this and any rationale trying to reason with it will be met with teenage like sarcasm". Be mad, hell im not happy about it. But no need to sass other posters here who agree or even understand the decision.
