G Trey Augustine - Michigan State, NCAA (2023, 41st, DET)

Wouldn't expect him to run out the clock to UFA, South Lyon Michigan native, wants to play for the Red Wings. Yzerman would have to both the goalie situation/timelines even further for it to get to that point.
Maybe he wants to keep his options open in case Cossa grabs the spot and runs with it... He could force his way into a more favorable situation to become a #1. Not saying it is likely, but these NCAA players have that option.

We all understand it’s a possible path, it’s just that a kid who grew up a wings fan is highly unlikely to go that route.

There's no reason for a goaltender to sign an ELC before 3 seasons in college. It's not like they get promoted to the NHL at young ages in any event.

People forget the kid just turned 20 years old. It was always a coin flip if he would turn pro and when they acquired Mrazek with a contract for next season, the writing was on the wall that Trey and the Wings had likely already made their decision.

There’s always been a good bet Augustine would never see Grand Rapids. He’s a natural goaltender. The best we’ve seen since Carter shaft. They don’t need to grow into their bodies like the new breed of goalies that need 3-4 years of development. He was always going to use college for 2 or 3 years and try coming straight into the NHL at 22-23.

That’s where things still stand.

Also tells me the Spartans are going to load up on CHL and portal players, and maybe the Gavin McKenna talk isn’t just talk in East Lansing.

So definitely don’t count Sparty out to land Gavin McKenna. Especially now, knowing he has an elite goaltender to play with.

Fowler is from the same draft but just signed his ELC that starts in 2025-2026.

He'll play in the AHL on a try out in the next week...

Weird that Augustine doesn't do the same.

Not too weird.

Detroit would have likely put him in the ECHL like they did with Cossa. I’d rather play ncaa hockey and have a shot at the championship than playing in Toledo for peanuts.
