Mason MacDonald is one of the best goalies ive seen come out of the atlantic region. Ive seen several top goalie prospects develop in the NSMMHL and he is one that will stand out in my mind. Will he be the next great pro Goalie ? not sure - but if his change in performance after being traded this year shows anything its that he has refocussed on success at the next level as he realizes that he has to work for each rung. Cant wait to see him be a dominant goalie in the Q this year and prove he is a standard above the rest.

That first goal was horrendous, but it was the first shot he faced in 4 months. It didn't shake him, he looked cool as a cucumber. Made a bunch of shots that were difficult look rather routine.

I would be shocked if he's not starting for Canada.

yeah that first goal was a bit brutal, but this kid is price-like not a lot phases him. cant wait to see him dev over next 2 years.

I think he's still a decent prospect. With goalies you just never know.

I'm not holding my breath on McDonald being the Flames' saviour, but I also wouldn't give up on him after one mediocre season.

Charlottetown really got screwed with how Pittsburgh handled Daniel Sprong. Having him back, and making a couple of nice trades has helped to improve the team in front of McDonald. They were pretty awful defensively early on this season.

Stat watching for goalies in the Q is pointless. He has flaws. But he also shows a lot of potential. Hopefully he puts it all together.

I'm half expecting him to get traded for a more developed goalie sometime before the deadline or at the draft.

Forgettable season.
Will need to have a monster season next year to stay a Flames prospect to be honest. Thought he'd be the main name in the ECHL for Calgary; turns out Stepan Falkovsky is playing like an absolute monster down there and turning heads

There won't be much room for him next season in the AHL unless the Flames' brass thinks Gillies is ready for prime-time. Parsons has jumped over McDonald, and not just by a little bit.

I'll second this MM is hitting a point where we want to see something great from him or we wont be too sad when he walks, he's young and athletic so there's always that who knows element. But it's not enough to keep a roster/contract spot past next season.

Well I mean he's signed 2 more years after this one.. Soo he has at least 2 more years to step up, but this pick was always going to be a project, goalies take time to develop and I would be shocked if the flames don't be patient with him. This is his first pro year, give him time to develop, kid has some great tools, he could be great if given time

As for him being passed over by Parsons, Parsons is also on a very strong OHL team which helps boost his stats. It should be interesting to see him play AHL next year and see how he does. Don't be shocked if he doesn't impress immediately like MM isn't.

Not great. At this point I think Parsons has likely passed him on the Flames prospect lists.

I know goalie prospects are a crap shoot, but Parsons passed McDonald on the prospect list the day he was drafted.

I've always disliked this pick, but having watched him for a few years now there isn't one game I watch where he doesn't let in at least 1 if not more goals that are just total stinkers. I don't see anything in McDonald that screams he'll ever get even a sniff of the NHL.

Yeah he's got athleticism, size, flexibility. Half the time he looks like a wall. The other half he's a complete sieve. Goalies need to be consistent and mentally strong and Mason just never developed that.
