No idea what Meriläinen done since the 2022 WJC and since OHL but, damn he looks soooo much faster, like, in everything.

Side to side movement, down up movement, how quickly he can close 5-hole.

He looks like a complete different goalie.
Watching tonights game vs Ilves.

14 saves in period 1

Just so we’re clear.

It was Filip Gustavsson as the future starter but he got Caught in the numbers game and Ottawa had a few other promising goalie prospects

Then Mads Søgaard played amazing and he was the future starter. But didn’t look great in the NHL.

And now Meralainen is the future starter, right?

Ottawa is an underrated goalie factory.

NONE of them stay with the team though.

I think this is just about every team. Goaltending is so much about what's between the ears that instead of scouting them by watching their play, you should get a psychiatrist to have a dozen sessions with them before drafting. And change the draft so that they're not available until they hit 20 years old.

Yeah - it sucks for some goalies because a lot don't start hitting their stride until their mid-twenties, by that time they have already been waiver eligible and teams have to make a decision regarding them because of it.

2 of the 3 goalies you mentioned are still with the Sens. What other goalies has Ottawa produced recently? Joey Daccord?

Wouldn't say all of them are "Recently" but Chris Dreidger, Ben Bishop, Robin Lehner, Filip Gustavsson are young goalies the Senators gave up on.

That list is probably better than most NHL teams in that time frame.

Let Hilli work his magic with him for couple of months, he should get better pretty quickly.

Blomqvist sucked badly in last August too when he played couple of pre season games for Kärpät. Completely different goalie by the time when the regular season ended.

So 7 months later and he will make his NHL debut vs Canes tonight.

Wow. 7 months ago Meriläinen sucked at WJC and lost the starter's job. Now he's playing in NHL. A lot can change in 7 months it seems.

Very strong performance in his debut. Pleasantly surprised with just how well rounded he looked for a goaltender his age.

Interesting looking at his stats. When you watch his play so far in NHL you would think this is the guy that played in Liiga and is a top nhl goalie prospect. But his stats in North America makes you pause and demand greater sample size. I am a believer based on his style of play.

Ottawa needs him to be the former, given Linus’ injury history. Season is on his shoulders right now and he’s delivering. He will rack up the Ls if Ottawa doesn’t figure out its scoring.
