After his first two pro seasons thought for sure he'd be an established starter by now. Is he the next Jordan Binnington/Anton Khudobin or is he destined to be a career minor league goalie?

Always looked very shaky in net at the NHL level. I’m sure he could find work for some AHL team or overseas

Gillies only played in 5 AHL games last season while under contract to the St. Louis Blues on loan to Utica.

Gillies spent time on the Blues taxi squad last season.

I still think Big Jon will have an NHL career. Whether that is as a backup or starter remains to be seen. He had a couple of injury filled seasons that really hampered his development.

wonder if STL will give him a PTO. wouldn't be the worst thing, especially if Husso doesn't pick up his game
I doubt the Blues give a PTO to Gillies since St. Louis has signed Charlie Lindgren from Montreal and have Joel Hofer and Colton Ellis competing for playing time down in Springfield.

Hofer played more games then Gillies last season down in Utica.

Perhaps the Penguins would give Gillies a look since they are in need of a 3rd string goalie.

Clark Gillies at age 60 has more value

I remember the Flames had like 3 goalie prospects that Flames fans thought would be better than Demko. They all turned out to be trash.

Broad stroke.

I liked Demko more than Mason MacDonald, who the Flames randomly took before him. The most random selection, in a horrible draft for the Flames. Mason was widely considered the third best goalie at the draft and the Flames took him first. Demko and Nedeljkovic were the other two that were suppose to go in front of him.

Jon Gilles had a superior collegiate career than Demko, including a win in 2015 at the F4 tournament and being named as an MOP. Even if his two seasons in the AHL were quite good, not sure what happened with that dude, but his stock literally plummeted to a point Euro guys Flames were bringing in, were making him the backup.

It's also a life lesson. Hence why Calgary has Dustin Wolf, who may potentially be a top 5/7 goalie prospect on the planet, and none of us are even talking about him  don't put that evil on us.

I know nothing about goalie prospects but mason before Demko was an instant mistake even to me.

Gilles and Parsons looked promising as well but the goalie gods hate us. God Vancouver annoys me with their goalies

I know. Just the memory that I have of him. Jon Gillies + Leland Irving = Calgarys future in net lol

Great catch. Irving was very good in Europe and looked like there might be something there, too. Such a fine line for goaltenders (and to some degree a matter of fortune and opportunity).

All I remember was whenever I saw Gillies, he lost track of the net. It’s kinda important for goalie to be in the proper position for a save.

Irving has always been good on a team that he doesn’t have to make a save …:naughty:

There's also the weird part where I think Gilles career was derailed by the same injury that Demko recovered from.

Calgary has a cursed goalie development, but let's give credit to Ian Clark as well.

Didn't look great in the NHL and he think he had some injuries that really derailed him. Can be had for the low price of a PTO.
