Crazy this guy wasn't picked. He's a showman type of goalie. Dude can absolutely steal games, and it's not as if he's that erratic. He had a SV% over .900 as a draft-eligible, which is pretty good. But he's 6'1, so teams would rather draft goalies that are tall and bad. I think he could get drafted the next couple drafts or be an eventual UDFA signing.

Headed to Boston College for next season. There will be a lot competition from Fowler. I think Fowler is better, but Korec is good enough that he should be able to play a respectable number of games over the coming years.

My scouting report from his USHL season.

Big fan of this guy. I have no clue how he didn’t make the Slovakian World Junior team. All due respect, no way they have 3 better goalies than Korec. Really good mover in the crease. He can steal games, if he’s on with tracking shots. I also think he’s pretty composed back there. There’s definitely some movement. He’s very athletic, so he uses his athleticism, but he doesn’t do anything crazy in his movement around the crease. He has good hockey sense in reading how plays develop, and I haven’t seen many bad goals that he gives up or bad rebounds. The weakness is that he’s 6’1 and he’s one of the older players in the 2023 draft, but I would completely bet on this guy. Big upside. Take him round 3 or 4, and maybe you get a starting goalie, which would be a steal. He’ll probably even be available towards the end of the draft because I don’t think it’s a lock he gets picked, but I think it’d be stupid if he didn’t. There aren’t many better goalies in the upcoming draft than him.

It's crazy how much lower a guy can get drafted or not even drafted at all, just because of a couple inches of height. A great example is William Rousseau and Quentin Miller. The later was drafted before Milic, was a backup who had easier games on the best team in the CHL, yet his partner wasn't drafted, and was one of the best players in the playoffs. I'm not hating, but as someone who pays a lot of attention to goaltending in the CHL, I notice so many talented goalies being overlooked, over less talented but taller counterparts.

Another element to it is that there are so many of these smaller goalies out there that have these great stats in the CHL, USHL, NCAA, and then NHL teams won't even give them a shot. They then have to go to Europe, and even if they thrive there, there's not a guarantee they'll ever get a shot with an NHL team.

So people will say that they weren't good enough, but is it really that or was it that they didn't get the chance to show if they were good enough? I think if it was 100% merit based and teams weren't such size-queens with goalies, we'd see an even distribution of shorter and taller goalies. We may even see more shorter goalies because more than the other positions of hockey, there's not the same contact element to the game at goalie that there is at defense or forward. I can at least see why teams are hesitant with smaller forwards or defenseman. Goalies aren't battling for pucks in the corners.

Played well tonight against Providence. Stopped 24 of 26 shots in a 3-2 win. Providence are a top 10 team. He doesn't get to play that much because Fowler is so good, but he did a good job and has generally done well so far when they have given him starts since getting to BC. Hope they give him a few more starts. Fowler doesn't need to start every game.

22 save shutout last night. Has a .954 SV%. Only three games, but still has a .939 SV% between the two years in 7 games. I suspect Fowler will leave after this year. Hopefully they give Korec the chance to earn the starting role if that happens.
