Jacob Fowler is better than Trey Augustine
Augustine had a tough weekend but that Michigan State defense left him out to dry all weekend long. He made a lot of saves that could’ve made the score a lot worse. There are definitely a few he’d like back this weekend, he let in some softies but he was on an island a lot. BC’s defensive zone system is much further along than Michigan State’s. I’m a big fan of Fowler but Augustine was left on an island a ton all weekend, there D left him out to dry a lot

It's not just this weekend though. Mich State has had a very soft schedule before this BC series. They were 5-1 but it wasn't really because of Augustine. Maybe it has more to do with the guys in front of him but from the highlights I have seen and then these two games I don't think he's off to the greatest start.

I hear ya, I haven’t seen him outside of this weekend. He was just left out on an island so many times this weekend, it was kind of nuts. That game Thursday shouldn’t have been as close as it was.

That said, I did think Fowler looked great last night. He’s really good positionally, never seems to be in the wrong spot or gets himself out of position. One of those quiet type goalies but he also made some great saves in his own right. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him starting over Augustine at the WJC

At least he admitted he didn't watch the games. Lots of highlight watchers on these forums throwing out strong opinions
I got no issue with Fowler. He's very good. Seemed like an unfair shot at Augustine to me is what I'm getting at.

BC has the better team, despite Michigan State making some improvements since Nightingale got there. BC is arguably best in the country this year. Michigan State might be top 10. There's a gap there.

And the bad schedule comment is stupid. I think that stuff matters a lot less for goalies than other positions, although I also think it's stupid for forwards too. Everyone in every league faces bad teams. It all evens out over the course of a season. You still have to stop the shots, and it's not like he was facing 12 lobbed shots from the blue line in the prior games. Last Thursday he faced 45 shots (stopped 42) against Canisius. They are unranked, but 45 shots is 45 shots. I don't buy the idea that goalies stats can be inflated by a weak schedule.

How else am I supposed to form an opinion? Only those that have watched every minute live of Augustine can say anything about him?

Well highlights can tell you if a guy is giving up soft goals. Then I could look at his stats and the two games I watched him play. Maybe I will hold off on commenting until five years from now!

Based on this and some of your other posts...looks really promising. Great positioning and athleticism. Like most young goalies, still needs to work on rebound control and to a degree, tracking the puck. Has the right attitude to do that, IMO.

I always have difficulty with goalies as it's the one position I never played at any organized level but I have to say in my 25 or so years of closely following all Hab prospects, Fowler is the prospect I've been so impressed with and expect him to be the best goalie we have drafted since Price. He just seems to get it and looks very solid in net.

On the other hand I watched Primeau put up one of the best U-19 seasons for a goalie from the top conferences (NCHC, HE, Big10). His U-20 season was also excellent and we see how much he's struggled so far in the NHL. I have said the Habs did not do him any favors with his development, starting with MB calling him up while he was on a slump having let in something like 15 goals in 3 games and then at 20 with not that many games under his belt he gets called to the NHL to face the best offense in the league (Avs) for his 1st ever game. From there the yo-yo has not been kind to his development so far, we'll see what this year brings though as he's looked better so far in limited time.

Obviously consistency is paramount for goalies. Unlike skaters who can be sheltered to a degree if they have a bad game. I watched Price closely in Tri-Cities after we drafted him. And based on the small sample-size only (your vids, ironically ;)), I think Fowler is ahead of Price. Price had times where he couldn't keep his intensity/focus from beginning to end in a game. IE, he would stand on his head making impossible saves. Then he'd let in a stinker at the worst time. Of course not in any way saying Fowler will be as good as Price, just my observation at this point in Fowlers career vs Prices. Price IMO carried that bad habit into his pro years too. Just not as regular.
