Many (most?) KHL rinks are NHL size or close to it. It is not as big of a deal as before (and I think it's even less of an issue for a goalie). That being said, having him under the Avs supervision is a lot better for development and cultural integration. He's 22. I honestly feel like if he doesn't come over this summer, he's just not going to at all.
At 22 he's still young and got runway but he needs to get his ass on NA ice if he wants to play in the NHL. He needs to commit to come over and play, even if it means the AHL. He needs to get used to the the smaller ice surface and the changes that result from it.

I disagree, he's a goalie. Plenty of goalies come over older and transition fine, especially since their development curve is higher. Shesterkin, Sorokin, Samsonov were all in the 22-24 range. Francouz was late 20s. He's currently a starter on the previous Gagarin Cup winner on a competitive team. To go from that to playing in the AHL is a rough sell, and I'd argue his development in the KHL is better there than it will be in the AHL.He's 22. [edit... completely OT... but why is there a difference in ice size between international and NHL ice? I mean until this season my university, (Alaska - Fairbanks) played on an Olympic size sheet of ice at the Carlson Center. They just "upgraded" it to an NHL sized sheet of ice last summer. But why was there a difference in the first place?]
I hope you are right. I just feel like goalies that make an impact are coming into the league younger than they did a decade or so ago. It just seems to me that at 22, someone is considering not coming over. Shouldn't that be a warning flag of some sort?I disagree, he's a goalie. Now if he signs a 3+ year contract than my feelings may change, but if it's a 1-2 year contract I fully expect him to come over.
The most recent, similar examples are Shesterkin and Sorokin. Both were starter for competitive KHL teams that won the Gagarin cup. Sorokin was 24-25 when he came over and Shesterkin was 23-24.I hope you are right. I just feel like goalies that make an impact are coming into the league younger than they did a decade or so ago. Again, I'm asking out of ignorance, I'm not trying to create a scene here. It just seems like if you want to be an NHL goalie, you would get over here and start working towards it as soon as humanly possible.
NHL rinks used to be different sizes until they were standardized. Some of the arenas with the most history were smaller than the official sizeI'm still trying to figure out how we came up with different sizes of ice in the first place.
Yep this is likely what its all boiling down to right now...If they didn't have Wedgie under contract for next year, I feel like he's already coming here as the backup. However, with Wedgie here, and MBW signed for another 5 years as their perceived starter, it feels like Nabokov doesn't want to go to the AHL for a year and then have to fight for PT for 4 years after that, and that he'll stay in the KHL.
I should look this up. I imagine some 14 year old has a video on YT that explains this shit already.NHL rinks used to be different sizes until they were standardized. Some of the arenas with the most history were smaller than the official size

That being said... I wonder could the Avs trade Wedgewood? He probably carries some reasonably decent value after the year he had with us. $1.5M for a veteran backup goalie who put up fantastic numbers with us.
Could see a few teams with young inexperienced goalies having interest in him. Buffalo, San Jose, Anaheim(If they trade Gibson) are all teams I could see having interest.
Then you bring over Nabokov as the #2 but go get a really solid #3 guy that can be ready to come up in case Nabokov struggles a bunch. Maybe someone like Vanecek.
I don't know if trading a backup goalie is ever going to get a high return. That's a big risk to take for like a 3rd round pick at most. Even a 2nd rounder doesn't really make me want to do it.
That guy is obviously worth more than just his on ice contribution too.
So signed, but not playing in Loveland or here
Not sure how I feel about that. Wedgewood is only committed for this upcoming season. It sure would be nice to have Nabokov over here in the AHL this season getting used to NA hockey so he's ready to compete for and win the backup role the following season when Wedgewood walks.
Yeah, this guy will never play a game for the Avs.
Traded within the next 8-9 months.
Is this based on something you've seen in his play, or are you like me and basing this off his reluctance to come over and get started with it?Yeah, this guy will never play a game for the Avs.

IMO, reluctance to come over + MBW signed for 5 years + Avs 0 other "top" prospects to trade for help = he's used to acquire somebody this coming season. Is this based on something you've seen in his play, or are you like me and basing this off his reluctance to come over and get started with it?
