So tell me, is he worth a second round pick? Its obvious the sharks could use a high quality goalie prospect, but goalies are historically not worth drafting because they are a crapshoot.

Their own second rounder is too high. The Colorado one might be a good range, depending on how high it is, but I think a team like San Jose needs to focus on BPA, and not filling needs. Their prospect pool isn't very good, and reaching for a goalie isn't a good idea. He's not going to fill any NHL need within the next 3-4 years.

Understandable. I didnt really know the range he should fit in. Also pretty unlikely anyone we draft at 60th becomes the elite prospects we need.

It only seems right to start from the net out on the ‘All-Defensive Team’ and while you probably expected to see the best netminder in the draft in Yaroslav Askarov but Drew Commesso doesn’t get the love that he deserves. Last year he was the NTDP’s U17 starting netminder last year and got a first-hand look at Spencer Knight and witnessed how the elite level goaltenders train and develop. On top of that, he has been competing against Askarov at the majority of the top international tournaments for the last couple of seasons.
Commesso has been in the shadow of his American predecessor and his Russian rival and while he isn’t on the same level as the two elite goaltending prospects, he isn’t far behind. He has better raw stats on a team of lesser quality than Spencer Knight did last season and he has played well at international competitions against Askarov in the past, even if Askarov has out-dueled him the majority of the time. Commesso is a calm, structured netminder who tracks the puck well and has the athleticism to make the desperation save. Commesso doesn’t get his justice as one of the best netminders in this draft class.

Boston native Drew Commesso has spent the last two seasons backstopping the US National Team Development Program in the USHL, exhibition games against college teams, and in their various tournaments. Playing this year with the Under-18 squad, he put up a 2.05 goals-against-average and .920 save percentage in 27 games. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the team’s showcase event, the IIHF Under-18s. Last season with the Under-17 squad, he played in 37 games and put up a 3.24 goals-against-average and an .886 save percentage. Commesso also represented the US at the 2018 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. In four tournament games he put up a 2.48 goals-against-average and an .899 save percentage.

Prior to moving to Ann Arbor to play for the US NTDP, Commesso played for St. Sebastian’s prep school. He also played on the Cape Cod Whalers Under-16 team. Commesso is committed to playing hockey for the Boston University Terriers next season, joining fellow US NTDP draft prospect Luke Tuch. Should he change his mind and opt to go the CHL route, his rights are owned by the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. They drafted Commesso with their first-round pick, 11th overall, in the 2018 QMJHL American Draft.

Seems like you read a lot of “under the radar” - “not getting the hype he deserves”....he did have better stats than Spencer Knight did at the NTDP yet doesn’t get the press that Knight did. Will be a steal for some team IMO.

totally agree, he has been super solid for his whole career as far as I can remember since like 13-14. Never got that Knight tier hype but there's no reason to think he can't be a hell of a goaltender

I had him #45, and he goes #46.

Second best goalie on my board. I find him very high floor for a goalie. Don't see many weaknesses. Does he do much spectacular? Not exactly, but at the end of the season, he puts up a lot good performances and has a high SV%. Has produced well for years, really consistent, always been a highly rated player going back like 3-4 years. Hard to get a more proven and reliable goalie in this spot than Commesso.

Unless Rockford is trash he should do really well. Commesso is close to Devon Levi in talent. He's the modern ideal goalie that just lacks a big frame. He's very mobile, agile, quick to recover, tracks the puck well and is very good at tracking shots, knows how to approach situations positionally. The only question is can he handle the transition from NCAA to pro which he should.
