Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect Christopher Gibson of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending January 9. Gibson, who is the top rated CHL goaltender in NHL Central Scouting’s midterm rankings at number two, went 2-0-0-1 with a goals-against-average of 1.58 and save percentage of .950.
Gibson stopped a total of 96 shots in three games beginning his week with a solid 37-save performance as first star of a 2-1 win over the Montreal Juniors on Tuesday. On Saturday, he stopped 23 shots despite a 3-2 shootout loss to the Victoriaville Tigres before making an impressive 36 saves on Sunday as part of a 3-2 overtime win over the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
Gibson, an 18-year-old Finnish native is playing in his second QMJHL season with the Sagueneens. In 21 games played this season he currently holds the best goals-against-average and save percentage in the QMJHL with a mark of 2.09 and .930 respectively.
Fellow 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect Mike Morrison of the Kitchener Rangers was also considered for the award after winning two games in two starts with a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .954. In the WHL, two-time award winner Darcy Kuemper of the Red Deer Rebels went 1-0-0-1 with a goals-against-average of 0.960 and save percentage of .962.
