If you’re going to hire a rookie first time GM, it needs to be someone with experience and knowledge about hockey like Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic or even Rob Blake. Not some gimp kid with ZERO hockey experience.

No GM in the history of hockey has ever done LESS with MORE than Dumbass did.

Imagine having Matthews, Marner and Nylander all on ELCs with a ton of cap space and all their draft picks in hand.

Certainly Kadri trade was idiotic. Kadri was being traded no matter if the right player was available. It was a matter of best defender at that time. Which was Barrie. A player we wouldn't have even been able to afford to re-sign even if he fit in.

Keefe was an idiotic hire.

Sad part is, Dubas thought he knew better than Babcock. Babcock wanted nothing to do with Barrie. Looking at Barries career afterwards, he obviously was right about him.

Doesnt matter if he didn't like Babcock, if he listened to his veteran coach on types of players that win, we'd have been way better off.

So then you believe that Matthews, Nylander, Knies, Tavares because chances are Tavares will be back, Domi, McMann, Rielly, Carlo, OEL, Tanev, McCabe, Woll AND Stolarz.

Are ALL going to suffer season and/or career ending injury.

That is what you are predicting because that is the ONLY way your doomsday scenario happens.

Even if it did that would be enough to drop them into the bottom 5 in which case the pick is kept.

And it doesn't slide to 2027, it can't that belongs to Philadelphia and that pick is top 10 protected so I'm not actually sure what happens if the 2026 pick somehow is top 5.

I am not confident Treliving and his history of guys he brought in (Klingberg, Bertuzzi, Laughton, Dewar, etc) that he will bring in players who make a difference. Most likely scenario is we "trade" Marner for cap dumps

1) Rebuild by lucking into a McDavid, Mack, Crosby = Very quick turnaround
2) Rebuild without lucking into a McDavid, Mack, Crosby = Slow & painful

Not a hard fast rule, but just ask Detroit how much fun it's been never getting a top pick despite years of being bad. Or Edmonton pre-McDavid spoiled with top picks but no elite talent among them.

It's not as simple as you make it sound.

If it were Buffalo wouldn't be about to miss the playoffs for 14 straight years.

They got Eichel, AND Dahlin, AND Power, AND Reinhart and that's just the draft picks.

They had a 1/2 center position of Eichel and ROR.

They had Jeff Skinner

Evander Kane.

The talent that has come through Buffalo has been ridiculous.

Wouldn't you say that DET is stuck in no man's land? Perhaps BUF for always being near the bottom of the league. I know this group hasn't gone very far, but I still always want the team I cheer for to make the playoffs. Life was truly shit when we couldn't even qualify for the post-season.

Chiming in to say, oh definitely not.

Keep your eye on Detroit in the next couple of seasons. They're going to surprise.

It's the common perspective even amongst their fanbase, but I don't think they're seeing the larger picture and I think Yzerman has been brilliant in his strategy.

It's completely unpopular and its the same one we should have stayed with. That whole group from the net out is going to catch the NHL sleeping.

Nah, Detroit is reaping what they have to pay for having a horseshoe up their ass when they drafted Federov, Lidstrom in the 6th and 7th rounds, getting Draper for a dollar. f*** them

How much credit did they get for years for basically being lucky. Had nothing to do with their system and coaching. Scotty Bowman lucked out on coaching a bunch of first ballot hall of famers for like 10-15 years

Like most things, there was good and bad with Babs.

He liked Hyman, and Kadri, disliked Barrie. Disliked the Muzzin acquisition, wanted Hanifin over Marner, played Marincin way too much, forced Freddy G into the lineup and overplayed the shit out of Z.

Pretty sure the Leafs learnt from 2006-2014 that you only have two states. Full compete and full rebuild. Doubt the Leafs ever get stuck in the middle again. Full win is now till 2028. Likely full rebuild afterwards.

I'd love to know what OEL, Stolarz, Lorentz, and Carlo think of this Leafs group. The former 3 coming from a Cup Championship team and the latter coming from a Bruins franchise that has been the class of the league for years and was part of a Finals run, the best ever NHL regular season, and routinely beat us every postseason. How does this Leafs room compare to those ones?
