Future of the team is incredibly bleak

It's only looking bleak because they're unwilling to make necessary changes to the core.

People are running out of things to blame to shield the core. Who is left? Keefe is gone. Dubas is gone. Even the head scout is gone. Previous supplementary players are gone. So many trade deadline acquisitions have come and gone. Might as well blame the fans next and change us to put everyone out of their misery.

The reality is simple.

They need to walk away from Marner, Tavares, and probably Rielly too (if he waives). It's time. If they lose in the 1st or 2nd round this season, you simply walk away from at least 2/3 and not even think about negotiating with them. It's a straight out the door sendoff.

They need to change the dynamic of their core group.

I would say the same even if the core was McDavid, Draisaitl, Makar, and Hughes because results matter. Chemistry matters. Sometimes guys just don't work together and the Leafs management has had this smacked across its face for multiple years yet refuses to accept reality.

To be clear, I'm perfectly okay letting Marner and Tavares walk. They've run their course here and I think there's enough evidence to support as a group they don't work when the games matter.

I just think if they do indeed leave that the Leafs are more likely to take a step back than get better and I hope people are prepared for that.
This puts into perspective the truth that players are worth different amounts to different teams, though value is often treated as a constant.

Marner may be worth 12M to some teams, but how much is he worth to Toronto? Ranta was worth 12M to Canes and Stars, but not to Avs.

And these types of decisions aren't made on AAV rounding errors, they're significant.

Is it really likely that we take a step back opening up 22M (more factoring a Marner raise) to replace JT and Marner? This isn't the same thing as Oilers losing McD or Drai, or Avs losing Mack, or Tampa losing Kuch, or Bruins losing Pasta. The value to team is very different.

I'm more worried about our 2C than I am Marner (Avs probably feel good replacing 75% of their offensive quarterbacks + Necas), and ideally we dont have to after squeezing JT into a discount.

Marner isnt the offensive cornerstone of this team, and if he is, then it's all for naught anyways.

All ownership cares about is making the post season.l and jersey sales. Otherwise they would have fired shanny years ago.

I think $21M to keep them is a safe assumption. Sorry, I just can't.
