Post-Game Talk: FULL VIDEO - Jacobs, Neely and Sweeney - 4/23/25

McAvoy, Debrusk, Coyle, Carlo, Johansson, Krug, Clifton, Acciari, Nordstrom, Backes...
Yes, I was exaggerating
Ill give McAvoy (although that was a 14th pick), Debrusk and maybe Johansson. Maybe add Halak? If I remember he had a great year. The rest are a dime a dozen.
Btw, I took a look at the Johansson trade. Prof Donnie did a good job on that one. NJ did nothing with the 2nd and 4th round picks he gave them.

This might be unpopular, but the DeBrusk draft pick isn’t something to brag about as a point in Sweeney’s favor. He was a vastly inferior player to Barzal and Connor at the time, and remains a vastly inferior player 10 years later, and Sweeney reached for him. So yes, technically a hit, but not really someone to mention when defending Sweeney as a point in his favor given the context.

The biggest failing of Debrusks time with the Bruins is that he wasn’t traded for McDonaugh in 2018. That trade for TBL and subsequent no trade for BOS at the stage for the next 5 years for each franchise of success and (according to Charlie) failure.

I stand corrected. I was way, way off on Krug.

Nordstrom played all 23 playoff games in 2019, averaged 13:43 minutes per game, 3-5-8 and +2.
which put him 8th in scoring for full time forwards that year and Backes and Kuhlman both put up points at the same pace just played less games. So a 3rd liner.

he also went 0-2-2 in 13 playoff games the next year.

I like Nordstrom as a B, he played hard but not really a notable signing

*EDIT - changed Kuraly to Kuhlman (got my not so special K's mixed up)

The one thing I don't agree with Sweeney is the January 3rd pivot point. The real pivot point was when they went out West and got clobbered in Winnipeg on December 10th. After a 9-game "in-season pre-season" starting from when Sacco got hired where they played a pile of cakewalk opponents in succession, once they were back to playing quality teams they were quickly exposed as one of the worst teams in the NHL.

Disingenuous of Sweeney to pick out everything wrong with the team that doesn't start with the piss poor roster construction. It was a "slow start out of training camp" (i.e., Monty mailed it in); "brief turn around under Joe" (i.e., we showed our roster was good enough to compete under an engaged coach); "lost our focus in January" (i.e., mental errors and player engagement led to downturn); "overcoming more and more injuries (i.e., injuries can be an excuse, guys).

Nowhere in here was there a "this is mostly on me. Our roster had trouble scoring, trouble defending, there were injuries to be sure, but I have to do a better job." I thought this was the offseason of accountability?

He used to play for the Bruins, is good friends with Cam, and the Jacobs family likes him. He knows he has a cushy gig and can say whatever he wants. Harry Sinden went through 12 coaches and never won a cup in 28 years as GM. But he got extension after extension and told the Jacobs family that the problem was the coaches, and the Jacobs family agreed with him. It's clear that the Jacobs family will throw the coaches under the bus and side with the GM, provided that the GM is someone that they're close to and/or used to play for the Bruins.

I'm starting to wonder how quickly Monty figured out that the group handed to him by Sweeney was absolute doggy-poo. What did go through his head watching the likes of Riley Tufte and Max Jones in training camp? Because I can absolutely believe that management believed that those two would be part of this year's squad full-time.

Monty tried to change how this team played from previous years, maybe he figured out really early that Sweeney didn't give him the horses to play a faster, more up-tempo/aggressive style that he wanted to play. He had no time for Morgan Geekie, while an effective shooter, isn't the greatest skater.

What Monty actually saw was his very best players stinking up the place.

Swayman, Pasta, McAvoy, Marchand, all terrible out of the gate. And of course, the comedy team of Carlo & Coyle.

Lindholm looked like he was playing hurt (he was) and Zadorov couldn't take enough penalties for a team that couldn't kill them off.

The Jacobs family probably didn't even know who coached the Bruins during Harry's time.

What would make me think they can turn it around? Sweeney took over a team that missed the playoffs twice and within 5 years they were in the Cup finals.

Plus, I think our spot in the standings is artificially inflated (deflated?). They wanted to be bad after the deadline. They rode Lohrei's -43 no matter what. They shut down Lindholm and McAvoy. They played an AHL lineup most nights.

At the deadline they were 1 point out of the playoffs. Step 1 of their rebuild plan was to get a top10 pick.
Thanks for your posts. I agree about the Bs spot in the standings.

Clearly this was a decision to get the team better for the future. The AHL players that made up the Bs at the end of the season got some NHL experience and we got to see how they looked.

I think they will be better next season. I am actually looking forward to next Fall.

Some of you need to check yourselves.

You wanted big changes ....they did that

You wanted to tank...that happened...but you bitched about it too.

Bottom line it is usually the same posters that bitch about anything no matter what.

They won't be asking ANY of us who should be the next coach, who should wear the "C", what players the Bs should get...and that is probably a good thing.

But go ahead and get your info from Felger and Mazz :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

I can't watch it. Can't take 5 minutes of the professor spewing excuses. I'm surprised he didn't beat up the injury issue. How about McAvoy playing like dog poo until he was mysteriously better for the 4 nations, then gone for the year? How about Lohrei at the very bottom of the entire league list of +/-? How about Carlo playing like he was made of porcelain? (for that matter the entire team not named Zadorav or Kastelic).

Did he take credit for anything? like Geekie.

Did you listen to his trade deadline presser? Where he literally said all the things you are complaining he didn’t say next to his boss who was acting like a three year old?

Sweeney thought team was in neutral and teams need to have a direction. He thought the team prior to the deadline could have potentially challenged for a wild card spot, but at that point, team wasn't going to get healthy. It brought the question of, how effective was the team going to be with key players out, and Sweeney thought they weren't going to which is why the deals made at the trade deadline were made. Claims ownership of the team for what it was, for the lack of depth, and inability to score which were all things that made the Bruins a competitive team in the past.

On Marchand he says they couldn't find a contractual common ground.
