Happened to catch this HNIC segment tonight. Friedman reported on conversations from the GM meetings, as teams tried to get clarification on how the GI rules are being applied in reviews.

There’s a good checklist of factors and lots of examples. Unfortunately, it kinda creates more questions than answers, and Friedge still left frustrated with the inconsistencies. Nonetheless, I thought it was an interesting and worthwhile discussion.

Honestly, if the league can’t do a better job defining the rule and explaining it to teams, then coaches shouldn’t be punished for an unsuccessful challenge. Maybe the league should just do their own expedited review on anything close (like they do for goal scored with a high stick, or puck fully crossing the goal line).

The changes have been clear this season. Goalie interference isn't just touching the goalie anymore, it's limiting the goalies movements to a save attempt that isn't optimal. In other words, it's interference if the goalie tries to avoid contact with the attacking player while making a save.

e.g. A player blocks a goalie from pushing out to cut down the angle of a shot from the blue line, instead of bumping into the player, the goalie moves back and to the side and the puck goes in. There was no contact, but was ruled no goal. This was an actual situation earlier this season.

Except this isn't applied in every case. Montreal vs Philly game. The Philly player intentionally goes into the crease, gets behind Dobes. His skate pushes into the push skate of Dobes, leaving him unable to attempt to push across. Goal still counted.

They actually go through that one in the video. There’s apparently an emphasis on where the goal was scored. Like blocker or glove side. It’s crazy how much subjectivity there is in the “ability to play his position” and “ability to reset” factors.

It was meant to be simple but then they kept moving the goal posts and made it nonsensical.

If a player is out side of the crease and the goalie comes out and makes contact, somehow that's goaltender interference now, which is absolutely ridiculous because if the goalie wasn't already there planted and cutting down an angle, it should never be interference. I saw a goal where a player was outside of the crease and the goalie comes out and makes contact and somehow that goal was disallowed.

Yeah that's absolute bullshit and the fact that they have massive issues with figuring out what is what, they need to hammer out the basics and stick to it and leave it at that.

That's really stupid because he literally can't get to the other side of the net if the player is interfering with the skate needed to plant and push over there.

A borderline goal is going to get called back in the playoffs and this is going to change again. Just wait. Right now its way too ticky tacky. The Islander and Flames ones were stupid and that was just this week alone.

Yeah, but the Habs are the worst so its part of the natural order that bad things should happen to them.
