I'd agree... if Marner didn't play a similar way yet produced just fine under Berube. The main difference there is Rantanen is a proven playoff performance who can adapt to his team mates whereas Marner doesn't. He gets swallowed up by the pressure and makes poor decisions that Rantanen doesn't.

Granted, trading Marner would have be the still ideal solution, but that ship sailed the moment his NMC kicked in.

Rant was a dog on a bone vs Colorado, but, hasnt done sqaut since game 1 vs the Peg. 1 goal, 5 assists in his last 8 games on a team that has a wealth of offense and vs a goalie who lost his job last series and only got it back due to injury, and Dallas is making him look like a star goalie.

its proven that when he's flanked by a star he performs great, and when he is extra motivated to beat the team that traded him away, his compete level is off the charts.
He's certainly not keeping up that drive and level of play and desire now though.

...and sometimes though, its just that the matchup is better or worse, and your stats reflect it!!

this is grass is greener nit picking. I once did a deep dive into Rantanen's playoff prowess, and if you do likewise, he had 1 great run and quite a few 'leafy' ones

Marner has 63pts in 70gp. And can't elevate his game when it matters the most (1pts in last 4gp against Panthers).

I wouldn't take Marner @ 10M/y on my team, but i'd take Rantanen @ 12M. But that's me
