According to 31 thoughts Rantanen for Knies was close to happening. He didn’t say Carolina or Colorado.

But by his mentioning of it happening “earlier” I’m guessing it was Colorado.

That would have been insane

Rantanen re-signing in Toronto just seems unlikely.

It was pretty well said it was either Dallas or Toronto in the end

It’s pretty clear he’s talking about the trade from Dallas, because that’s when all the Toronto rumours came out

Also it he didn’t make it seem like Knies for Rantanen was close, if Toronto was willing he’d be in Toronto and not in Dallas

The most realistic offers that there were Dallas had the better package

I am happy they kept Knies. Leafs need to stop having 4 forwards making 11+ and Knies is already a warrior in his own right. He has shown in several playoffs now what he is made of. Very happy he remains a Leaf.
showed he's a superstar

I almost wonder if it was Rantanen to Toronto and Marner to Carolina. That would have been a good sequence for Toronto

Then how's Carolina supposed to have Stankoven + two 1sts and also sign Marner?

Rantanen >>>>> Knies, would have needed an extension on Rantanen since Knies is still RFA.

Leafs should have jumped on that.

Sure he won't cost 11+, but he's still going to be very expensive - bridge you guys can probably get him cheaper but if he's signing long term with how the cap is set to explode I don't know how that number doesn't start with an 8 at minimum.

30 goal, 60 point player who plays difficult minutes and comes out as a + player defensively in really what is his sophomore year. Still room to grow too, has the upside to become a 35-40 goal, PPG player.

I don't have a problem with 8M for a top line winger. That means 3M more for another position on the team. If Tavares comes back cheap as well, that's another 5-7M for another spot.

The era of 4 players making top dollar is over. The retool will be more players who can do things instead of a few players who do everything
