What will the new extension look like? i think it falls below Hronek..

6/7 years at 6.5 mil AAV? must be nice for these upcoming UFA's to be dealing with a higher cap.

Dhaliwal: He spoke with Marcus Pettersson's agent and he says both sides know its going to be a long term deal and that he expects something to get done very soon.

Friedman: " I believe the Canucks are getting to UFA Marcus Petteron's agent pretty quickly here on an extension.

I don't understand why players are in such a rush to sign extensions when they first get there. He ultimately was traded there because of locker room issues, wouldn't you want to kinda get a feel for the culture of the team that you're signing with before you commit? It's not like the offer won't be there in April or May.

Because Vancouver is probably one of if not the best market on the west coast to live in.

lol Q Hughes making 7.8... Of course older contracts look great.

Percentage of cap is probably what you should be comparing.

The thing about cap percentage when the cap is exploding is interesting. Cap percentage of when in the deal? When the cap is going up 3 million a year, basing it on the year it was signed is fine. But in this landscape? Will be interesting. E.g. if I am a player signing a 7 year deal, I want to talk about the percentage in year 3 and 4.

So you think he's making his decision based on where he's going to sleep during the regular season? As opposed to the players and the staff he'll be tied to for the foreseeable future? And almost every city is a great city when you live like a professional athlete. Granted, I can certainly see the appeal of LA or Miami over Edmonton or Winnipeg (speaking only as a place to live), but you'd think that would come secondary to a good environment and a winning culture.

I think he's happy to take a 6-7 mllion over a 6-7 year period to live in Vancouver.

Hughes Hronek Pettersson is a pretty great top 3 if they can in fact lock Petey up.
Myers chews through minutes so i dont mind having him if he's No.4 or lower.
Need D-Petey and Willander to establish themselves and then they're really set.

UFAs now know that the cap is going up by 20M+ over the next 3 seasons so they have leverage to push for a bit more. I think there will be a bit of a middle ground where players aren't going to get what they would under a 113.5M cap, because there isn't that amount of free cap available to support that - but they will get more than they would have gotten if it wasn't known that the cap is going that high that quickly.

It's the RFAs who will benefit the most. If you have a young first line forward who previously would have gotten 8x8, and they only will sign for 9 or 10, maybe you have to think about it because a 1-3 year deal might position them to get a lot more than 10. Similar to when Draisaitl got 8.5M, and everybody lost their minds because they previous number for his contemporaries was 6M.

He’s one awkward hit or puck to the head away from never getting paid to play the game again and you’re wondering why he doesn’t move to sign an 8 figure contract relatively quickly?

RISK Pressure and Comfort

First off he's going to UFA and inherits risk in doing that. If he gets hurt or his agent Klingbergs him he blows millions.

Then there is pressure to get a deal done so the team can have cost certainties locked down for the summer. If a player balks at that they wont get special treatment and in fact most teams will move on

Players of his ilk and age typically have an idea of the rooms and players they are going to join and the cities they will be playing in. I do agree with what you are saying but a deal like this with prior relationships and knowing from both sides what to expect it should be fairly comfortable for both sides to lock it down
