Pettersson isn't a top pair D though. He's a #3 that you probably should pair with a #1 OFD.

I hear you with the age factor but to get him to sign and maybe lower the cap hit need term. We need to surround Hughes while we have him and every penny counts. We see what happens but nice to have another legit top 4 guy.

Kind of feel with what happened with the Canucks being handcuffed in the Miller trade and then trading the NY first away for a UFA rental that $5.75 million for 6 years would be the kind of gift they've earned.

I actually feel bad for Vancouver right now because every hockey analyst is looking at their calendars for when Hughes becomes a UFA and trying to decie how much NJ will get him for at this rate.

Unless of course Vancouver retains him somehow through a potential short term retool

Key takeaway is that Rutherford once mentioned he owed Pettersson for taking a team friendly contract that is now expiring when he signed him before he quit and took his take out menus to Vancouver, so he will definitely get paid this time around if Marcus and his agent kept that comment in mind and JR has anything to say about it. They freed up some cap and the cap is also going up, so I would suspect around 5.5-6m or under 6m/yr, likely giving up some $ for term and a modified NTC for the first few years, etc.

Imo if the cap hit is in the 5s then he's asking for the full 8 years.
