Tennis: French Open 2025

1 and 2. Like watching Cinderella's carriage turn back into a pumpkin. Extremely disciplined performance from Gauff. Very impressed how she held her nerve and played her best match of the tournament.

Because of the doping controversy, after the good vibes in Rome, some predicted that Sinner's reception at Roland Garros would be way less forgiving. Down to the semis now, and I don't believe that I have heard a single boo in Sinner's direction yet.

Tomorrow's guesses:

Sinner over Djokovic in four sets: I would never write off Nole when he is playing this well, but Sinner has been virtually flawless through five rounds and has youth on his side.

Alcaraz over Musetti in five sets: Almost picked the upset here as I think Musetti has played a little better overall than Carlos so far at Roland Garros. But I have to go with the defending champion.

Some spectacular tennis to watch from both players and a bit of a surprise as Musetti takes the first set 6-4.

Really good quality tennis and Musetti flying high atm. He's a master defender but I'd still think that Alcaraz has too much firepower in the end... But who knows.

An all-Italian final; now that would be something.

Musetti has settled in nicely while Carlos is maybe one more service break away from getting rattled. 2-2 on serve.

What a mammoth hold for Musetti for 5-4. That could have been the pivotal game of the match if Carlos had managed the break there. Lorenzo definitely got tight, stopped getting his first serve and was very lucky he didn't get broken.

Musetti not so lucky next service game as Carlos breaks a suddenly tentative Lorenzo for 6-5....but Carlos can't hold and it goes to a breaker. What a gift that game was for Musetti.

Alcaraz runs away with the breaker 7-1.

As much as I like Musetti, I'm hoping for Carlos to win. I mean, I really like Carlos, too, so that's not the reason. A Musetti/Sinner final would likely be one-sided. The Italian #2 ain't beating the Italian #1 in the final at Roland Garros, no way.

On the other hands, Nole fans should be rooting for Musetti against whom Djokovic would have a much better chance of winning the title.

I go back to the ninth game of the second set. Even though Musetti eventually held, that was the pivotal moment, the moment when he became suddenly uncertain. Now he is showing signs of physical distress, too. Exhibit "A" in the fact that tennis is as much psychological as it is physical.

First break to Jannik as Nole looks like he is going to said a record for attempted drop shots.

Nole must be thinking that even unsuccessful drop shots, of which he has had many, may help tire Sinner out. But this isn't like hitting drop shotting against Zverev. Jannik is finding depth and angles that make the tactic problematic.

Tighter, tenser second set at 3-all. Pretty much a must-win set for Nole or the closest thing to it.

....and Sinner breaks for 4-3. Getting close to life support time here.

Sinner can't serve it out, 5-all. Wow....but can't convert. Sinner serving for the set again....and, it takes some doing, but Jannik holds for a two set lead, 7-5.

Credit to Novak for battling it out, but in a tough 2nd set, Sinner takes the 2nd and is one set away from advancing to his first French Open final!
