Tennis: French Open 2025

Rune wins in straight sets against an overmatched Nava. Holger was so casual, content to waste no energy, as he resolutely stayed in third gear the whole match. He wasn't being a dick about it or anything, but it was kind of entertaining watching him produce maximum results with a relative minimum of effort.

Fils advances in a hard fought match
What an understatement.

It was a near miraculous match with the oddest of set scores 7-6 7-6 2-6 0-6 6-4. During the second tie breaker, Fils began to have movement problems, thigh, most likely, that increasingly got more severe. There were points where his movement looked very laboured, and I wondered if he could continue. From 2-all in the third set, he basically shut down as Munar, who was playing much sounder tennis all day, won ten games in a row. In addition to his physical problems, Fils was an error machine all day, ending up with nearly 90 unforced errors. So he was feeling all kinds of debilitating pressure.

Then he goes down 1-3 in the fifth set, the pain meds finally kick in, and the crowd, which had already been raucous, found another level of insanity and basically carried Fils home to an extremely dramatic and highly improbable win. All this ended with a spirited version of La Marseillaise. If this had happened in a movie, nobody would be able to suspend disbelief sufficiently to take it seriously.

In another improbable match Bublik comes back from two sets down to beat Demon with another group of crazy set scores: 2-6 2-6 6-4 6-3 6-2. Demon was playing fine tennis, had a little bit of a let down in the third set which Bublik took advantage of and then he just never looked back. One of Alexander's best comebacks accompanied by some of his best tennis.

If you can say one player beats another respectfully, Sinner ends Gasquet's career in straight sets. Richard had a very good career and one of the most potent backhands in the history of the game. Hope he enjoys his well-earned retirement.

It's perverse that French Open officials keep putting Fonseca on back courts with limited seating. Given the high level of spectator interest, he should be playing on Chatrier or Lenglen.

Not sure I'm liking the TNT coverage (or any of its sub channels). Feels like they're trying to bring an energy to the broadcast that doesn't match what I'd expect for tennis.

...

Matches today haven't felt nearly as entertaining as the prior days. Maybe it's just the lack of upsets? I didn't see any of the Krejcikova match.

Edit- forgot about the Demon upset. Something about that felt kinda sad, though, it wasn't particularly fun to watch.

Fonseca with a nice clean kill against Herbert 6, 6, 4. Herbert played well, kept the pressure on, yet despite the close set scores, the outcome never seemed that much in doubt. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, I don't think I have ever seen anyone hitter harder forehands than Fonseca. It is the closest any tennis player has to a nuclear weapon and can be astonishing to behold.

Nole with a straight set win over the emotional Moutet. Basically another practice session, but, at least, a better one than McDonald provided.

Cobolli, with a nice four set win over Arnaldi, is looking more and more like a viable dark horse.

TNT has provided more exposure to Americans as opposed to their predecessor who would often hide matches on obscure tennis channel which nobody got. What a shock, the new deal with every game on TNT or Max is a huge accessibility upgrade. You mean I can actually watch not one but four games at once all morning and afternoon on Max multi view??

You could already do all of this in the US on ESPN for the other three majors.
