As reported by the Toronto Star’s Nick Kypreos, despite their interest in retaining Tanev, the Stars could not match the financial package offered by the Maple Leafs. Kypreos highlighted the disparity, stating, "The Stars weren't in the same ballpark as the Leafs to entice Tanev to re-sign there. Their best offer was $15 million over three years."

Tanev got six hilarious years. It’s irrelevant what anybody else offered

Glad he got paid, but there was no way in hell we were going 6 years for Tanev. Hope the Leafs can't weasel their way out of the final years through LTIR bullshit, though their fans are convinced they'll be able to do it. It'd be pretty blatant cap circumvention, but that hasn't really stopped teams before from trying (and succeeding)

little surprising they wouldn’t go to 6 x 3. Its a top pairing defenseman. Would that have been enough to keep him from toronto? Who knows.
