Hakanpaa is a physical 3rd pairing guy usually near the top of the hit leaders in the NHL I believe. Not the big open ice hitter type but in board battles he's very physical.

Gets called for a lot of penalties (sometimes just because he's bigger/stronger). No passing/transition/offensive ability whatsoever. Has a hard shot that never hits the net (usually gets blocked right away). Plays on the PK but isn't very good there, although that can change with new scenery/a new PK I suppose. Often times he is easily drawn out of position looking for hits or just losing where he is on the ice.

Not a good skater but it's fine for a big guy. Needs to be played with a really good puck mover.

Will be interesting to see if his injury is in fact career ending or how he recovers from it. Surprised he got signed on day 1 of free agency honestly with that major question mark around him

I'd imagine Lyubushkin is probably about the same player?

lyub is much better than what you've described jaani.

Lyub isn't a great skater but hes not shit either. He's just kinda slow but not really at the same time. He will lose foot races but rarely puts himself to be in that position unless he's covering for his partners mistake (read shitty pinch by rielly here).

Dude clears the net well and stops cycles. Thats the key. He similar to hack needs to be paired with a strong puckmover. If you do that you're laughing because he's the guy that will shut down plays and cycles in his end and then the other d will have to lug it out or have that good first pass.

Lyub is smart. He knows his role and is fairly decent positionally but will get lost at times if its an uber fast team like the avs. In the o zone he will defer to his d partner if theyre known to be more offensive but he's got some sneaky upside there. I've noticed that he can legit make plays in the o zone like lug it down to the bottom of the hashmarks and find open space and players because the opposition does not view him as a threat. He's also got a decent shot that usually makes itself to the net. All in all hes a fantastic 5 and a below average 4. Paired with a great skater hes an elite 5 and a mediocre 4.

"I reached out to a handful of NHL scouts about the deals,...
Another simply asked, “Why would they buy out Suter if that was how they were going to use the roster and cap space?”

That about sums it up.

sorry to clog up your boards too much but didnt get an answer on tanev like jaani.

Is he cooked or how much juice do we think he's got left?

Misery is a choice boys. These signings are pretty bad but they’re playable bodies and with the cap sliding up every year from now on, very buriable.

We don’t know that Roy, Walker, etc were available to us. We do know that, for right or wrong reasons, Nill did not want to give long term this go around. I personally disagree with that, but I don’t make the big bucks.

We can choose to be miserable and write off the team, or give this all a chance and see if something can go right. I’m leaning towards the latter because they’re my favorite team and misery, again, is a choice.

You'll like both a lot when they're playing. Warriors, sacrifice the body a lot, pretty sound defensively.

Hakanpaa is prone to occasional gaffes. He'll take a lot of penalties too.

Neither will provide much of anything offensively. Tanev can move the puck but he won't do anything fancy.

I don't know if I'd expect Hakanpaa to play more than 60 games a year and he may be on LTIR for the last year or two of the deal. Tanev is harder to say, but he puts himself into positions quite often where he could suffer a major injury. Obviously there's no way he's expected to play all 6 years of that deal.

Tanev will likely be great with Rielly, Hakanpaa shouldn't be anywhere but the bottom pair. You'll see both a lot on the PK as well.

So basically, both are good defensive specialists at varying levels, but both are injury prone (in different ways) and will likely miss considerable time throughout the life of their contracts.

How I feel about something isn't a choice bro. It's how I FEEL. It would be nice to always be happy though. What I nice thought.

Very fair! I think the signings are bad too. My point though is I don’t think the team is bad, and instead of prognosticating on how this could make the team bad, we can choose to believe in them. I see a lot of people deciding to go ahead and bury them for next year, and that’s weird given the past half decade of Stars hockey. They’ll be fine. The signings aren’t ideal or even good, but they’ll be fine. I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind, but the doom and gloom I’ve seen in the past 24 is probably a little much.

100%

After watching Edmonton go to game 7 of the finals with Nurse, Ceci, Kulak, and Desharnais on D and lots of analysts talking about how teams will be coveting physicality it makes sense with what Nill did. We were a very soft team last year, especially with Hak injured.

I don't think Dumba will be that bad and he is an upgrade on Suter. Lyub is basically Hak, and Smith is better than Hanley. The X-Factor on D is Nils. IF he can figure things out and be a regular, his 2 way game would balance out our D pairs.

Sure, these signings weren't who I was hoping for, but it is what it is, and we still have a team that should make the playoffs. Anything can happen after that.

Tanev will be good for at least 2 of the 6yrs.
But he's injury prone. So that could change (obviously it can with anyone)
He gets around the ice well enough, but isn't fast and does make a good 1st pass, and is quite positionally sound. He struggled against McDavid(who doesn't really though) but He's a very good #3/4.
much better than i expected when we got him. He'll be good as long as he stays healthy.

I feel we are going into this season pretty much the same on defense prior to tanev and I think the offense should be better. We are clearly setting ourselves up for the Benn and Seguin contract to come off the books. It wasn't ideal signings but they won't handcuff us for the 2 huge offseasons we got coming with the cap space we get.

Is Nill signed for next season? It’ll be interesting who the gm is (if not Nill) when we have all this cap room. Maybe he won’t sign bonehead deals

I think I’m more upset with the term of Dumba and Lybushkin than the actual players. I don’t want them handicapping us the next few seasons when we finally have some cap opening up. We will need to sign Wyatt, Oetter, Stank, Mav, and Robo coming up.

I’ll wait to judge the team this season until they start playing. Hopefully they’ll fit in.

You'd better pray we get someone like Nill when he retires or did you forget the wonderful free agency work of Nieuwendyk?

I don't care about Dumba's deal, he's basically replacing Suter, but he's more mobile, so hopefully that'll be a slight upgrade. Lyubuhskin if the one I do not like at all; neither the term nor the cap hit. If it was about a million cheaper, I'd probably be fine with it.

But I don't think the Stars are gonna be handicapped in re-signing any of the players you've mentioned because all of their deals are staggered with guys who will likely be retiring or at least taking a drastic pay cut at their age.

I'm not miserable and the bones of the team still make them a contender regardless, but the offseason thus far can only be described as disastrous.

I'm not thrilled with Dumba either but he is probably better than Suter. Not sure how the lines will shake out, but we played Suter with Miro for about half the year before Harley stepped up. I do think Miro - Dumba will be a better pair than Suter - Miro if the plan is to get Miro on his strong side.

I'm perfectly fine with Lyubushkin. If we had missed out on Tanev or another top 4 D at the trade deadline last year I think we would have made a trade for him instead.

I think these two signings bring some extra physicality and shot blocking over Suter and Hakenpaa and coming out of last years playoffs i think those were some areas Nill wanted to address.

I'm not sure if theres another big name right handed D at the deadline this year to make another move like the Tanev trade but we should be in a similar position again this year to look at something similar.
