GDT: Free Agent Frenzy--9am PST, 7/1/15

I think the Kings are looking for someone with a cap hit of 3.5m or less. Keeping in mind that Bieska's 4.6 cap hit was too high for the Kings after getting Lucic. I think that's what they're probably looking at.

And of course if Voynov is coming back (which is sounding more likely now ie: plea deal). The Kings will still have to move somebody. I'm starting to think that Matt Greene makes the most sense. I know, I know, locker room guy, right hand shot. But if your top 4 is Muzzin - Doughty and McNabb - Voynov, and Martinez and the new guy is your bottom paring. That leaves Greene and Forbort as heathy scratches. And in with this cap crunch we're in, 2.5m is took much cap space sitting in a suite.

You can't move Greene. We've already lost RR to retirement. We can't lose another SAH physical dman.

If anyone gets moved, it'll most likely be Amart.

Kings defense was by all accounts a total gong show last year; finished top five as usual. The Kings needed a top line winger and got one. Things will be fine. Bunch of drama queens on here.

That's awesome. We are down two D-men and you are saying we are going to move a 3rd. Classic.

I'm going under the idea that the "new guy" would be Greene's replacement. Without the space to bring a Sekera type in. Martinez is now too valuable to trade, imo.

Gonna be awfully hard to find a 2nd pairing dman for 3.5 or less money.

What part of IF did you not understand?

I don't see that. But then again, it really depends on what type of dman is brought in I suppose. Regardless of what you guys think, Greene is very good at clearing the crease, and like I said, he's our only physical SAH dman.

I agree. But I think thing they'll try to get more of a bottom pairing guy, if anyone at all. It's possible that a Voynov plea deal could come as soon as tommorow. Which would give the Kings a more solid idea of what their cap space is, and effect if they go after another d-man. We'll just have to wait and see.

Doughty and Muzzin will be good for 24+ mins per night.

It's guys like Martinez and McNabb who have to be counted on to play more minutes closer to 18-20 mins, with Greene and Forbort getting less than that (14-16 mins or so).

If they can manage with that until Voynov is back, they'll be fine. So long as the forwards also contribute in their own end.

I'm curious what the kings offered Williams during the season. I'm wondering if he expected more offers and then had to come down in price. By that time the kings had replaced him with Lucic and no longer had money or a roster spot for him. I can't imagine the kings wouldn't have agreed to 2 years at 3m in December.

massive gap on defense - lol
What about someone like Tom Gilbert?

Montreal has 8 NHL defenseman (Tinordi can't be sent down without clearing waivers and Pateryn got basically a 3-year one way contract.. and quite honestly earned his roster spot last year).

Gilbert is on a 1 year, $2.8M cap hit.

He was fantastic in playoffs. I'd rather trade Emelin than Gilbert, but no one wants him.

Outsider (Blues fan) wondering about Jarret Stoll.

I've seen some tweets (like this) out there that there's not much interest in him. I get the whole party-drug misdemeanor thing is hanging over his head, but beyond that, is he still a useful player? Or has he fallen off?

I didn't watch him much last year, but in previous years remember him being pretty effective against the Blues in the playoffs. (Then again, who isn't?)

he's good on the dot and that's about it

no offensive upside and takes a lot of dumb penalties

His true value to the team (besides being a solid room leader) was faceoffs. He fell off so sharply in faceoff wins last season he became dispensable after the season ended. It was highly unlikely he was going to resigned even before the Vegas incident. That killed off any chance of him coming back.

blues have one of those, too:

As bad as Williams was last year, I'm starting to think bringing him back over Brown may have been a better option.

So as we sit here and wonder if Voynov will be back to start the season or if Lombardi is cool with a McNabb/Martinez 2nd pairing vs trade.... Next on the agenda: Kopitar. Does DL get it done for less then 9M?
