Proposal: Free agency edition Trade Rumours/Proposals [MOD - Stay on Topic] 5

There was talk that Grier was trying to spin the Zetterlund trade into a big package deal for Norris.

I wonder if Mario Ferraro was one of the names involved. If he is open to re-signing in Ottawa, I wonder if they would revisit him in the summer.

Maybe something like Chabot for Ferraro and picks+prospects. It would upset people with how Chabot is playing, but Jensen isn't going to be here forever and the value of Chabot at 9.5M in real dollars is diminished when we have Sanderson to man the top PP unit.

I'm convinced that Staios is going to dismantle Dorion's build one piece at a team, with the exception of the few guys who fit the mould of the kind of team he is trying to build. It doesn't seem like he has looked at what Dorion gave him and said I will fill in the blanks and build a team around the Dorion's idea of what it should be on the ice and culturally in the room, it looks like he looked at Dorion's team and said my idea of what the team should be is x, so anybody who doesn't fit that mould is getting traded, even if they are a good player on paper (see Chychrun for Jensen, which most would consider a huge downgrade on paper, but was an upgrade in terms of fit).
Who cares about real dollars.

Chabot is not going anywhere. Jensen will either be signed or replaced. G is also on his way out. This team still lacks offensive skill from the backend when either Chabot or Sandy or out.

Defensemen move all the time. If you need a replacement just wait and you will find a guy for cheaper if you have a good scouting staff. No need to trade big assets

We already have far too little offence coming from our blue line. Ferraro for chabot just takes way skating and ability. I like Ferraro but not in our current situation.

I do think Chabot gets moved tho

Why are they getting rid of kesselring tho.

And ya dumba is simply bad. Matinpalo is much better
No reason for Utah to get rid of Kesselring, I was simply stating that he is what bigger and more physical looks like (what the ig poster expressed wanting to see in a re-jig of our defence, and then suggested Dumba...).

The Sens will always care about real dollars in vs. out, as we're not one of the rich teams in this league.

A new arena will help mitigate that somewhat, but that's years away and in the meantime we're dealing with massive cap increases coming (reportedly 25M over the next 3 years), a weak Canadian dollar and a potentially terrible economic situation coming up that could put a damper on ticket sales.

Andlauer isn't wealthy enough to not care about losing millions a year, nor are the minority owners obviously. It could be a rough couple years for the Sens franchise as a business, which could mean some tough decisions regarding personnel.

Chabot has been great this year but no one should be surprised if he's dealt for a more cost-effective alternative.

Pelech or Romanov

Real dollars are objectively an issue league wide for 75 percent of the teams. You can find various references to it in the media.

If you read my post, it isn't a suggestion. It is speculation.

Chabot and another piece for Lafreniere and Soucy.

I think we need to upgrade on Giroux at RW on the 1st line next season. Some of our cap dollars should be spent there. Giroux would move down the lineup if he signs for about half of his current $6.5M salary.

I think we also need to upgrade at 3RD next season; Matinpalo is fine as 7th D but not physical enough for my liking. I am hoping that Kleven improves, which he should after getting his rookie year in this season.

Our 4th line needs improvement as I don't particularly like the players we have available there now: Gaudette, Highmore, Reinhardt, MacEwen, Crookshank. I think we need more physical playoff style players there to reduce the load on Tkachuk.

Hopefully, Zetterlund can be that upgrade internally. I'm not saying he is a first line winger, but it's rare for first lines to have 3 true first liners together.

The way that I look at it is that we have three pairs, Tkachuk+Stu and Cozens+Batherson, and Pinto+Amadio. Right now, Giroux and Perron are both complementary guys on those top lines, but they are also both older players who are likely to decline.

I don't think they would ever walk away from Giroux, and with Zetterlund having a decent case through arbitration, I don't think we have room to add another forward cap wise.

I wonder if Green could make Trent Fredric and Justin Brazeau into proper bottom 6-ers?

Seriously. Ceci is a more reasonable target.

I can't see Dallas letting him walk. He is playing top pairing minutes for them.

He would have been a great fit for us earlier in the season if not for our lack of cap+assets. Great veteran presence, and he would have been a solid #5 here who could play bigger minutes when needed.

What's funny is that we had Kastelic and Kelly.

Cousins is the right kind of guy I think. MacEwan looked good earlier in the season but it may have just been a small sample.

We need physical, but still fast enough to keep up with the play. We want pests, but not to the point of taking too many penalties on the 4th line. We need energy, but not at the expense of solid team defence.

It's trickier than it looks.

MavEwen is fast enough and he can be disruptive on the forecheck.. Cousins Jenik MacEwen .. get 'er done . All 3 are better than Gaudette defensively as well as on the boards.

at 5v5 In the last 4 games Gaudette and Highmore lead the team in giveaways/60 by quite a bit

Highmore 8.29
Gaudette 6.06
Stutzle 2.73

Takeaways
Highmore 1.66
Gaudette 0
Stutzle 1.82

Greig leads the team in takeaways/60 2.13 and has 0 giveaways,

Are we benching Zetterlund?

I am not sure how much Jenik played as a centre, but he seems to be having success as C with Big Mac on his RW in Belleville. I prefer Jenik and MacEwen over Gaudette and Highmore, but Green obviously doesn't and I wonder if Staios wants to lose the NHL games played experience if one or both are claimed on waivers.

The top 3 lines are playing well, so when Cousins is healthy and playing, I would like to see Cousins-Jenik-Zetterlund. Thinking defensively responsible crash/bang/garbage goals. Not sure that will happen under Green who has his preferred players for those roles.

We may not have the cap space to pay a better F than Giroux; perhaps Zetterlund can become the better RW we need on the 1st line. Or perhaps we trade Z to get one.

Here's a thought: If we go far in the playoffs this season, perhaps Marner would sign here for less ($8-9M) to be our better RW with Stutzle and Tkachuk. A pipe dream for sure.

He was drafted as a C. He was the youngest player in the 2018 draft born Sept 15. Played C for Hamilton Bulldogs; Played C for Tucson AHL
Jenik recorded 35 goals and 51 assists in 54 games with Hamilton, including 56 points in 27 games during his final season, highlighted by a 26-game point streak. If not for a season-ending injury at the 2020 World Juniors, he would have been the front-runner for the OHL MVP.

we have room for 1 call up right now if Green was actually willing to rotate Gaudette/Highmore out with the call up without having to risk a waivers issue until cousins comes back and he may not be back until the playoffs

It depends on if Green is willing to do this. Plus if we use the call up for the extra forward we cant give Ullmark a full night off since we wont have cap space

Does Marner hate money in this scenario? I can’t understand why else he’d choose to forgo 4 million dollars a year.

Sorry should have clarified that I meant at the pro level. He didn't play centre in any of the Sens pre-season/season games IIRC, so I wasn't sure how much C he was playing in Belleville and with the Road Runners. Either way, he deserves a call up to the big team after his recent performances. Curious to see if he can play C here too, maybe build some chemistry with Zetterlund who has yet to find his with his new linemates.

Need a hard to play against 4th line. Cousins will help. Gaud-Highmore are soft and Tierniesh.

Think cap could be an issue, not sure, as whatever they have they may use on Merilainen like they did a few games back when Forsberg started on Ullmark rest nights as you mention.
