it really depends on if they can skate and play an nhl shift (ideally well but at the very least not as a liability)
i really liked volchenkov when he was on our team but when he want to jersey he regressed quick
neil was amazing for our team for most of his career, his last year and a half to two years were rough though
if we are adding a physical player that can skate and not be a liability i am game and im sure most of the fan base would be too. The not be a liability is key though. The players that become the whipping boys are generally because they become liabilities not because they are playing physical

While I think Staois might re-sign Gilbert as the 7th D for next season, IMO Hamonic is better than he is, but doesn't fight any more. Gilbert will fight, but he's not a good D & will certainly be criticized.

I'm curious assuming the Sabres would be willing to trade Quinn rather than the 2nd, would have you taken Quinn, but lose the chance to get Zetterlund? Now I bet the Sabres wanted Greig if we also wanted Quinn and at least Pinto and something else for Peterka, so the point is moot, but I'm still curious.

i agree on both things which is why ideally we get someone that can do both. Hamonics primary issue to me is that he has lost a lot of foot speed. As such he just seems to be out of position but i dont think its because of a lack of Hockey IQ just isnt fast enough anymore. Its also expected because he is in that range where defenseman regress. I am very concerned about Jensen regressing soon too but thats a different point.
As for Gilbert it really depends on if we force play him as a regular or if he is actually the 7th dman. A lot of the criticism hamonic gets would be avoided if he was played within his role.
Also i much rather our defenceman be physical but have a 4th liner that fights. At the same time i think the timeline of having a goon/strict fighter is gone so it goes back to my previous point. I have no issue with having a 4th line forward that can fight as long as they can play a regular shift without being a liability.

Agree, Jensen has another yr on his contract & I would be surprised if he is re-signed. I expect that Yak will likely be promoted after a yr or so in Belleville to learn the pro game & replace Jensen on the roster.
The enforcer thing I also agree, but it's also why I wanted McCarron at the deadline. He's not a great player obviously, but he is serviceable on the 4th line, only makes $.900K can play both C or RW, takes faceoffs, plays on the PK & is big enough & tough enough to fight anyone in the NHL. Not sure how good a fighter he is, but he has fought all of the tough guys in the NHL. He's a UFA next season so I expect there might be plenty of interest with him then or this summer if Staois wants a guy like that.

Chabot is a lot more than a PP2 guy. It'd be hard to find a physical player as good as he is at $8M/year.
If he wants a big physical guy, I think he'd be replacing Zub. It's easier to find someone who can play with Sanderson than to replace what Chabot brings.

I think he'll start in the AHL. Whether he plays the full year or not, idk. He looked damn good in preseason.
Yeah in a world where Sanderson’s even strength production increases and Yakemchuk can also drive offense I think it could make sense to move Chabot for a different element down the road.
But where we are today the team would take such a massive hit 5v5, I can’t see it being worth it. He has 11 pts in his last 15 games and has been one of our most consistent players this season.
Chabot has been so good this year and is an integral part of our D core. Zero chance he’s the guy to get moved.
We don’t need the cap space, we need good players. And Chabot is excellent at transition and attacking the o-zone. He’s been solid on D as well this season and has been our best defender on many occasions in my opinion.
We can find a better way to add a punishing D, like replacing one of the guys who isn’t a cornerstone on D like Sanderson or Chabot.

Huge no to moving Zub or Chabot. Defense is finally playing well and those two are integral. Zub because without him Sanderson can't play his game, and Chabot is playing difficult ass minutes that will be hard to replace. Plus his deal isn't the most attractive and we aren't winning in any return unless the other party is giving us more assets.

]What? Sanderson is damn good and can play his game as long as he has a decent NHL dman with him. But so far in his NHL career the only person he's played with who fits that description is Zub.
He was able to play his game at the Four Nations Cup without Zub.

I would take Zetterlund over Quinn for our current situation.
I would not do Greig or Pinto for Quinn.
Unless we plan to move Batherson, I don't think we have a need for Quinn with our current makeup. I would love to see him acquired here, because of the local connections - but it doesn't make sense at this point.
I wonder what the Sharks bigger offer was for Norris. Maybe Zetterlund+Ferraro and futures?
Look how hard its been for us to find a steady stay at home defender for Sanderson and Chabot when he was our 1LD. Shutdown RD that can play on your top pairing are hard to find. Last time we had that before Zub was DeMelo and look how long it took for us to find someone as good. If we move Zub and don't find someone just as good, we're going to see Hamonic get extended
We're not getting a defender as good as the guys available for the 4N for Sandy. Unless there's a move where we receive a clear upgrade that fits within our cap, Zub should be untouchable.

You're not following along here. No one is saying dump Zub. I'm saying that if Staios wants to add a more physical dman then he's replacing Zub on the roster.
You're also assuming that what was near impossible for Dorion would be impossible for Staios. Staios got Chabot a partner in one offseason while Dorion couldn't do it in all of his offseasons.
Staios is better than Dorion, but even his finding the a good partner for Chabot is a temporary solution. Jensen is at an age where we have to anticipate him declining at the end of his current contract. Staios is more likely to find some size for the third pairing than trying to replace Zub with that type of player
Adding size isn't the issue, I just think it'd be very unrealistic for Staios to be able to find someone as good as Zub who's also more physical. Not to mention the cost or availability of such a player.
