You mentioned Verhaeghe's contract, it had a UFA year at 3 yrs and was .505% of the cap, that would still come under the 5+, maybe the fact that we already know the next two caps will be inflationary,

Anyways, I guess I just don't see 5+ as a guarantee by any stretch. We'll see I suppose.

With the quality of the 2026 draft and if we make the playoffs this season, we can't take the chance to NOT forfeit it this summer.

Regarding a potential "boring" off-season, it seems that Staios can get creative so we never know! He's committed to improving the team even if it takes bold moves.

Zetterlund - Stutzle - Cozens
Tkachuk - Pinto - Batherson
Perron - Greig - Giroux
Amadio - ?????? - Cousins

Of course Giroux would get paid as a 3rd liner from now on (not sure if he'd accept 3.5 - 4.0 AAV but I wouldn't offer much more). I think Pinto can become an excellent 2-way #2 Center and Cozens could focus more on offense if he plays Wing so I'd go with that. The way he could improve the forward group is to "dump" Perron (and maybe Amadio) to be able to afford another Top line forward but not sure how (UFA? Trade?). Look at that potential Top-9 :

Topforward - Stutzle - Cozens
Tkachuk - Pinto - Batherson
Zetterlund - Greig - Giroux
?????? - ?????? - Cousins

I was thinking of Vatrano's numbers for Zetterlund, so 4.5 AAV

But yeah, I had to dump both Perron and Amadio. We could probably get a pick for Amadio and Perron shouldn't cost too much to move as a 1 year veteran rental with a good reputation

If we could get a guy like Ehlers, I'd gladly do it. He's so dynamic, would make our forward much more dangerous.

I agree with you but it's hard to get that kind of player without drafting them. I am not going to pretend to know anything about scouting, but I think that's the justification for taking Eliasson.

It's difficult to find guys like that who can actually play in the NHL. It is why Gudbranson is always a hot commodity, despite everybody online hating when their team signs him. It's why Schenn actually got a return at the TDL. They don't grow on trees.

Next season we may very well have

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Jensen
Kleven - Yakemchuk
+ Matinpalo
+ a vet

That would mean Zub or Jensen has to move because I dont see us moving on from Chabot.

I think Gilbert could be that guy, and could be the 7D behind a Kleven - Matinpalo pairing. Yak will be the injury call-up but otherwise play in Belleville until closer to the end of season when he will displace Matinpalo and push the 7D out.
 
I’m thinking Chabot gets moved this summer. 8M is a lot for a PP2 guy. I think Staios wants a big physical guy.

Sure, I'd think an aging Jensen might be the guy to go though. Maybe upgrade Zub, or Matinpalo?

Chabot has been really good this year, we struggle producing offense 5v5, he's got the best GF/60 on the team 5v5 and best xGF among D.

If we can upgrade Chabot to a bigger more physical D that can also drive offense, sure I guess, I just don't think that's realistic.

It’s just my opinion. Dorion left the asset cupboard bare so Staios has had to be creative.

He really did and Staios really does.

I want to suggest moving Chabot, but I don't think Kleven is ready for top 4 duties and see no way to replace Chabot without bringing on a more expensive, longer contract, for what could well be less production.

Could be the Sens just hold on for next year and wait it out. Problem is, the cap goes up for everyone and Staios doesn't have a ton of $$'s coming off the books. Giroux, Perron, Jensen, Forsberg is about it in the next 3 years and some of those dollars will get consumed by Zetterlund's extension and Pinto's next contract, and there is the matter of a back-up goalie and replacing Jensen (Yakemchuk can hopefully step in but there may need to be a bridge signed).

Need Zetterlund to out perform his next deal and find another diamond in the rough. Good luck, Steve!

He did bring in Gilbert LD who I expect he would re-sign given he traded for him, he's fought both Tkachuk & MacEwan. I'd rather have MacEwan in the lineup over Highmore, but he's been dealing with some stuff. Not sure how good a player he is since Kleven is still in the line up. Yakemchuk is a bigger, tougher RD, Matinpalo has been good but he isn't very hard to play against, not very physical & clearly isn't a fighter. Most fans on here seem to hate those kind of players & they become whipping boys on here. I think McCarron could be available for trade.

I think his cap is fine at this point given his overall role, but with the history of Staios so far, it would not surprise me if we moved him, or just about anybody from Dorion's build except for Sanderson, Stutzle, Greig, and Pinto.

Tkachuk is a different case where he would only get moved if circumstances force their hand.

I hope he keeps trending in that direction. He certainly was exactly what we need when he was in college, I think he’ll keep progressing on that front as he gains confidence.

That said even if he does develop, I think we need to add one on top of Kleven.

I certainly could. Very much like Norris; a part of this core for years and skilled but maybe a high AAV and would like a more physical player filling the spot.
