If he can do 30/30 for ~60 points a year, I don't even think he'll be overpaid after this summer. 8 mil isn't going to be a top end player salary anymore, if it even is now.

For a team so desperately needing a goal scorer for Stu, and that being Norris' best attribute, I don't understand why that wouldn't be tried before this decision to potentially move on, and likely for a downgrade given his shoulder injury history.

Chandler Stephenson got $6.25M last summer in a tax free state, so I bet his ask somewhere else was probably ~$7M. That was coming off a season where he scored 16 goals and 51 points in 75 games.

I think there'll be a lot of sticker shock amongst fans this summer when they see what a guy like Brock Nelson gets paid.

Norris is overpaid, no doubt. But if he scores ~30 goals a season, it's a contract you'll be able to live with.

What makes Norris all that different?

People will say "well he's injury prone" and I'd counter that he's had one major injury that was extended because he was rushed back under our previous incompetent management and ownership group.

There should be no rush to trade him unless you get a good package, that improves the team now, back. You have one more year before you need to worry about extending Pinto and additional cap space in the summer does nothing for us since no one good is signing here.

Things I’d imagine would be seen as a plus for Cozens over Norris

2 years younger
1 mill cheaper AAV
1 year extra under contract
2.5 million less in real dollars per year for the next 4 years
Bigger
NTC further away
No injury history close to Norris, he’s missed 130 games over the past 4 seasons

I think he spends summers around Kenora, which is basically Winnipeg's Muskoka.

So he'd probably be tickled pink to go there. Not sure if the Jets would have any interest though, and if we have to retain half, we might as well keep him.

Valid points as to why there's some pros over him, but the downside might be he isn't as good as Norris in his own end and he scores less. If the Sens acquire Cozens, they'd be gambling on him returning to his 3rd season scoring form and that he can handle some more defensive responsibilities (unless they think Pinto can do it all on his own)

I would hate to give up on a young player & have him go somewhere else & be a star.

He will earn his contract soon enough but staying healthy is the key for him. He is also a good enough player to warrant interest. If they want to move him they can do that at any time during his contract, they don't need to wait until it ends.

To be clear my first preference is to keep him. I’ve been consistent on that since the offseason.

That said, if they’re going to trade him, on a longer term contract like his, retention is hugely damaging and we’re already wasting 1 million in retention on Korpisalo. So if they trade him I’d rather get less return but not retain.

Sure, those are fair. But if Cozens could fetch "a good NHL roster player, prospect and pick", Norris is worth more than "Carson Sourcy and Nils Hoglander".

Which is why I think the Senators motivation to trade him is being very overstated by Garrioch.

Would they like to move him for Jared McCann, or maybe Brayden Schenn? Yeah, I'd bet on that.

But will they dump him for bottom 6 players with bad contracts? Highly doubtful.
 
I thought Tampa was rumored to be in on Tuch, he would perfect fit here

I am not trading Norris. The record is clear with Timmy, Norris, Pinto down the middle. All three are different style of players - I like the mix.
 
If Hammer has a connection to Winnipeg and we can move him for even a 7th, that'd be awesome. Jets don't have much that we could even ask for. They have capspace available in the off season to extend their pending UFAs and RFAs.

I think Hamonic is pretty clearly ahead of JBD and Mantipalo on the pecking order in the minds of the coaches. I'm not sure they'd move him for the sake of moving him. Whether we like it or not he seems to have a role on this team, even when they have all their guys healthy.

In a perfect world the team would bring in someone like Luke Schenn to bump Hammer out of the lineup full-time, but given the lack of assets and cap space (and the likely need to focus on F's) I don't think moving him is realistic at this point.

Ya I think he's not going to be considered overpaid for very long and I agree, there is going to be some real sticker shock soon with the cap exploding. 8 mil could be 2nd line 50 point money before we know it.

Yea I don't get how coaches or management watches tape of Hamonic and nod to themselves thinking that's what I like to see.

He is so bad.

I don't think the cap hit of Norris is really the issue. It is too high, but with the way the cap is going, it will deflate soon.

It's the term, combined with the liability of the contract because of his shoulder injuries. The real money will also be a concern for some teams.

Sens may have to retain or take back bad contracts with term, but that isn't about Norris being overpaid, it's more about lowering the liability long-term. Getting Norris at 6M and then dumping a bad 3Mx3Y contract would be a lot easier to justify the risk on than Norris at 8Mx8Y.

Then it just doesn't make sense to trade him.

The prudent move would be to keep him until the end of next year, when you'll need to re-sign Pinto. In the summer of of 2026, the cap will be significantly higher, Norris will only have 4 years left, and if he puts up a reasonably good season next year (30G, 50-60PTS), you should be able to get a good return. I wouldn't be concerned about the NTC. It's 10 teams and Canada will probably take up 6 of the spots.
 
Staios isn't going to do anything guys. Just put that thought out of your head. He doesn't have the creativity or instincts required
