I wonder if it could be a 3-way trade between the Devils, Senators, and Islanders. Something along the lines of Norris with retention to New Jersey, the picks+prospects for Norris to the Islanders, and then Brock Nelson and a defenseman from either New Jersey or the Islanders to Ottawa.

Jack Hughes is out for the season. So New Jersey has both the incentive and cap space to add Norris. Norris at 6M is still risky because of his injury history, but it's a lot more tolerable when you see where the cap is going.

People will say if the Senators can get a 1st++ for Norris, they should keep them, but let's be real, they are trying to win now. That isn't going to happen. If they can get that kind of value for Norris because of New Jersey being in a bad spot, they are going to use it to try and improve the roster with rentals.
Why would you help Jersey and at the same time make your team worse. Nelson will be cheap acquisition anyways.I don't Norris contrat as a problem a lot of worse player are making same monry or close in the league. As of now he is playing north of 60 games . If get's injured again you LTIR him and you get some cap space back anyways. Production of Norris now is getting up each game. Do you prefer to get two Perron for the same price?

Going back 25 years, Bruce always picked a few players who the Senators are “shopping” and just hammered it every week. Eventually, most players get traded so he ends up right, even if it takes a few years!

I remember the days when the Sens were always shopping Radek Bonk and Sami Salo while inquiring about Dave Scatchard and Brad Isbister.

Lmao I remember always reading those rumours.

Then we finally signed Brad isbister only for him to be loaned to Switzerland right away lol

Montreal resigned Jake Evans.. would they have been better off trading him in this market, based on where they are at in their rebuild?

Maybe, but with the way the cap is going, he probably took a bit of a discount. They also are loaded with picks and prospects already from maximizing their assets in what was probably the greatest 5 year stretch to have a rebuild in league history because of how highly valued cap was.

I’d rather get less trade value than retain on long deal like Norris.
Why? Norris just potted his 20th goal, same as Stutzle & only Brady has more. This team needs goal scorers & he can score when he's healthy. And then there are all the other things he does well away from the puck that coaches love, reliable defensively, great at faceoffs, can play the PP & the PK, block shots, is second to Brady in hits, has a great shot & plays well in all 3 zones. I would hate to give up on a young player & have him go somewhere else & be a star.

He will earn his contract soon enough but staying healthy is the key for him. He is also a good enough player to warrant interest. If they want to move him they can do that at any time during his contract, they don't need to wait until it ends.

I don’t think they’re that far off. They’re flirting with a spot this year, by next year they might be a favourite for one of those wild card spots.

I bet they retain 50% on Schenn and flip him again before the deadline
For what? They gave up a 4th to deal Bunting.

They must really like Novak and really not like bunting.
Poor Bunting! Kyle has turned on him!

After last night I came away extra impressed with Donato. The guy doesn't need to play with premium players to produce/perform. Could be a fit with any of the Stu/Giroux, Norris/Bath, Pinto/Amadio combination's. Gives this team another scorer (extra nice that he's a 5v5 guy and not a PP merchant). A guy like Lukas Reichel could be a decent reclamation project as well, although apparently the Hawks want a body back and not a mid pick. Donato might be a guy that could be re-upped for a "fair" cap hit in the off-season if the team believes in him enough to give him term.

Carolina is testing the market for Rantanen. They may keep him if the trade market isn't strong.

They are clearly in a spot where they need to compete, so trading him for a late 1st and a few B or C pieces doesn't do them any good.

If they wanted a hockey deal with term to recoup what they gave up, would you guys do Batherson, a 2nd, and JBD for Rantanen? The scenario being there is zero chance he signs here, it's purely a win now rental move.

It's the closest thing Carolina would get to a Milligan on the trade. Which isn't to say it's the same value as the package they have up, but it's a top 6 forward with term, a second, and a roster player. When they traded for Rantanen, his value was higher based on the possibility of Carolina re-signing him. That doesn't exist now, he is clearly going to market.

Donato probably costs a 1st now due to this stupid market.
Let's wait it out and see what happens. Hawks not being able to retain makes a big difference as well. Plus Hawks could use Dman depth, so we can always swing JBD, a 2nd, and a prospect like Hamara for him, still more than teams that did retain got for their UFAs. Who knows.

I don't doubt that's the ask, but a lot of the picks in the bottom half of the 1st round have already been moved (current #17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30). The only teams with their own 1st in the bottom-half of the round are currently Ottawa, Columbus, LA, Carolina, Washington and Winnipeg.

It's entirely possible that once tomorrow rolls around a couple more of those picks are dealt for guys like Laughton, Schenn, ect leaving the Blackhawks needing to take slightly less (2nd++) for a guy like Donato.

Obviously the Sens can't compete if one of those teams puts their 1st on the block but, personally, I'd have no issue with a 2nd + JBD + a prospect (+ a mid pick to some 3rd team to get them to eat 50% on Donato) if that's "all" it took.

I wouldn't move Yakemchuk.

Jensen is going to be 35 next year and Zub 30.

It's easier to find a scoring winger than a top 4 RD with Yakemchuk's profile. Plus Peterka will be looking for what, $6-7M on his next deal this summer? Maybe more?

Yakemchuk could be an impact player for us on an ELC.

Yup. Peterka is a good player but I wouldn't do a Yak (+) for him trade for him. Value is there but it doesn't fit our team.

The only way I'd do it is if we're moving a forward like Norris or Batherson for a good young top 4 RD. That seems unlikely.

Dallas looks smart for going out early and getting both Ceci and Granlund for only a 1st+3rd.

It's still possibly people could hold too long and the market could crash. Like when Dorion wouldn't accept a 3rd for Ennis, and then the offers dropped to a 4th.

The issue with Peterka is that if we trade for him is that he is under team control after this season as an RFA but is not signed. Buffalo is apparently concerned about how difficult it might be to re-sign him and the possibility of the rising cap leading to offers sheets, and is partly making him available for that reason.

We can't give up top assets for Peterka without an extension coming with the deal, and that's not going to happen. The only possible way it would make sense is if Peterka was obsessed with the idea of playing with Stutzle, and would take a soft contract and forgo free agency to sign now. Even then, I don't see what assets we have other than Yakemchuk. Maybe Batherson, if they really like him.
