Sens are unfortunately in a terrible position deadline wise, possibly in the league.
They are on a bubble cusp. A pickup isn't just going to get them into the playoffs.
Then, they have literally nothing of value to offer as a deadlinne price.
They can't sell, because they are on the bubble cusp.
They are in no-mans land.
Can get a Patrick Brown type guy for a 5th or 6th, that is ultimately a complete waste
Of course it's dramatic. Look who it's coming from. Negative Nancy.I think that's a bit dramatic.
No single player will "get them into the playoffs". That'll be up to Tkachuk, Sanderson, Stutzle, Ullmark, etc.
But they can certainly add a depth player or two, someone who can contribute, chip in a goal, help the PK, etc. Those players matter. We're probably going to be in or out by 1-2 points, so every goal or kill will matter.
In terms of pieces to sell, we have 3 3rd rounders next year and guys like Crookshank, Halliday, Donovan, etc. That's not getting you Alex Tuch, but it could get you a Brandon Tanev, Colton Sissons, etc.
While I'm all for moving Forsberg at some point, I doubt management feels comfortable going into the playoffs with a rookie backup even though he has been great for us, especially with the up & down season Ullmark has had & his injury concerns this yr.The Sens should have been shopping Forsberg.
The Panthers just took on Vanacek for $3.4M and, IMO, Forsberg is a more accomplished goalie. We could have then brought up Merilainen and also gained some cap space to maybe add a decent LD or 4th liner.
Missed opportunity.
Those prospects are guys you send as a placeholder for future considerations, Halliday with likely mid round value.I think that's a bit dramatic.

3rd rounders could be in play. Likely for guys who make close to 0 difference with the team we have now.
Like I said, I'd imagine we are likely going to be getting a Patrick Brown type trade we have seen in the past, which almost always turns out meaningless.
They team is going to make the playoffs, or it isn't, on the backs of what they have now. A guy we pickup with the minimal assets we have is going to make a negligable difference bewteen the guys in place now.
We can't afford difference makers, we can afford to play musical chairs
This is really bizarre logic, IMO.
If we make the playoffs and Ullmark gets hurt, Anton Forsberg is not going to help us. We're going to lose, and lose handily.
It'd make sense to keep him if he was a good backup and actually provided some level of insurance. But he's bad and doesn't.
Tampa sending 2 1sts for Bjorkstrand and Gourde.
Bjorkstrand and Gourde just got 2 1sts.This is really bizarre logic, IMO.

In 2016/17 we got Burrows for Jonathan Dahlen and Victor Stalberg for a 3rd round pick.
They weren't "difference makers", but they helped the team down the stretch and into the playoffs.
It's not all or nothing. Adding a good 3rd/4th liner to replace Cousins is not what will propel the team forward. But it'll help.
Imagine we get Brian Dumoulin for a 3rd+Halliday and knock Hamonic out of the lineup. Is Dumoulin the difference between playoffs and not? No. Would he help? Yes.
Likely Howard for tuchTB also has pretty barren cupboards. No 1st rounder this year and outside of Isaac Howard, a lot of meh prospects.
So if they do acquire a Tuch or Bjorkstrand, I'm really curious what they're giving up.

This is a sellers market, a gigantic sellers market.
Dahlen was just taken as a high 2nd rounder who was having a great season.
The guys you usually get for a 2nd or 3rd are going to be going for much higher prices. The guys you usually get for mid to late picks are going to be your 3rd round ammo. And they are likely to be guys like Stalberg who offer little compared to who they are replacing.

Dahlen was ranked 45th, and taken 42nd 6 months prior to the trade.Dahlen was a decent prospect, but nothing special, even at the time. He wasn't much different than a Halliday or Hamara are today, value wise.
And yeah, prices do look high now, but eventually, all the chairs get filled and someone will be left standing. So you might be able to get a Tanev, Sissons, Dumoulin, Smith, Brazeau, etc for cheap.
On the Tampa trade, we've yet to find out how much retention there is, and Bjorkstrand is someone I'd classify as a "difference-maker" so I'm not surprised the price was steep.

Hamara wouldn't even be reciving an ELC is he wasn't signed after his draft
And yes, all of those guys are just moving a simialr player to fill his spot with someone else.
It's not made up, draft picks who go back for their overage season in the CHL almost never get signed to ELC's, they just get let go. Hamara isn't in Belleville as a 20/21 year old for a reason. Now you're just making things up.
We'll see what the Sens do. But this binary view of "you either have to get a player who gets you into the playoffs" and "no one else will make any difference" is odd.
Trade deadline history is littered with teams who trade 3rd/4th round picks to bring in depth players that help them.
Upgrading on Hamonic, Gaudette, Highmore or Gregor would be worthwhile.
