I know it's extremely unlikely but I think the Sens should be fielding offers for Brady Tkchuk right now. I don't don't think his trade value will ever be higher and I think there are teams who would be willing to overpay. I don't see this team becoming a true Cup contender by staying the course. The prospect pool is just too weak. Trade Brady now before he tanks his value by demanding a trade.

Sure it does. If we want a $5m cushion, we have an extra $3m to spend if Giroux signs a $1.5m salary + $3m "performance" bonus vs a $4.5m salary.
Im Not sure this is how it works or else the big teams would just sign all stars for 1 million and MASSIVE bonus’s.

There would be like 3 super teams and everyone else would be shit

Just reiterating, I have the ball park $, how it’s actually structured could be way different once it’s finalized.

Oh also, categorize this as weird…
Sens think they can trade Hamonic at the deadline if he’s willing to waive.

I don't think it's that strange that there would be a market for a veteran NHL defenseman who brings some size and physicality.

The issue with Hamonic in Ottawa isn't that he is Hamonic, it is that he is a #7 D at this point in his career, but he is used in a much greater role here, playing 20 minutes some nights.

His NMC names it unlikely that he would be traded, but if he didn't have it I could see a team giving up a 4th to 7th round type pick. Maybe even a late 3rd but that's really pushing it.

Honestly, for a team looking for a 7th RHD for a playoff run, Hamonic makes a ton of sense. His contract is cheap, particularly if we retain on it. He's not a top 6 guy anymore, but injuries happen and he can fill in. Teams like gritty guys that block shots and often overlook complete ineptness with the puck for bottom pair D,

He won't likely waive though.

It's because most superstars aren't over 35 or just suffered a major injury...
I’m just saying we wouldn’t save cap space and why wouldn’t a bunch of stars take massive bonuses that would far exceed their current contracts? Rich teams would take advantage of this all the time they could fit like 12 10 million dollar superstars underneath the 80 million cap

No what I meant is bonuses still count for cap hit unless you're over 35+ or just suffered a massive injury. Plus superstars want term as well for obvious reasons. If McDavid made 5 cents in actual money and over 20 mill in bonuses, Oilers are still getting hit with a $20,000,000.05 cap hit. Many players sign bonus majority contracts, which is how they get taxed less, and why a lot of contracts are buyout proof.

It's exactly how it works lol.

It is only for 35+ players or guys who spent most of the previous season on IR, and only on 1yr deals. There are a couple handful or legitimate players who are eligible for it each year, and many of them have signed deals under those parameters, including Bergeron multiple times, Brown after he missed the entire season, Kane, Krejci, Parise, Stastny, Spezza, Thornton, etc.

The bonus is applied at the end of the season - whatever you can pay off with your remaining/unused cap space is paid off, and the rest is applied to the following season.

Yup and there is one player that I actually think would look good in our top 6 in Mantha who is eligible for this type of bonus structure low cap hit contract.

All things considered; I would say that $4.5m per year for Giroux is very fair.
Consider that we had to offer Perron $4m/season for 2 years to get him to come to Ottawa, $4.5m/season for Giroux is certainly justifiable.

I get it that Giroux is 37 and looks very slow some games but he is still a very intelligent player that can slow the game down, still best in the league on face-offs, strong leader, etc. etc. Many intangibles with Giroux.

If we were to lose him, we would need to replace him and even if we were to consider him a third-line player at this point, it would take at least $4.5m/season to find a replaceable player, if we can get them to come to Ottawa in the first place.
Solid point. It'd be hard to get Giroux extended for a penny less than a few more than what Perron makes considering their productivity.

I think the deal will be fine in the end. Won't age as badly as some other vet deals we've seen

He's definitely an interesting candidate for a deal like that, although typically the bonuses are not tied to performance but are rather "givens", such as playing a low # of games, whereas I think with Mantha you would want the bonuses tied to performance (and not set at a particularly low bar)

I thought you can only move bonus $ to the next year if your cap was maxed in the current year.
Yes, but that is only applied after the season. So we have the cushion throughout the season, and then whatever we don't use up is used to cover part (or all) of the bonus.

That's really dumb. This team has a core in place - #1 power forward, #1 D, #1 C, lots of depth down the middle, #1 goalie and a future stud in net. You can fill the roster around those players without needing a top notch prospect pool. When this team is healthy it looks like a contender.

Oh I didn’t know it was for 35+ guys with other criteria. I missed that part
